NSTYVN (nasty VN)
FASTVN, though I don't know if it's taken...

And more to the point, why shouldn't I check to see if my username has been taken as a number plate?

As far as I know, I'm the only one (that I've come across) on the net using mouce as a username. Kinda strange really.

This thread is rolling along nicely, but it's just a teeny bit off topic. LOL. Doesn't matter though, I think the question was answered.

There's a whole lot of funky number plate combinations that are possible, but just make sure you check the link before you get too excited. That website is great, it allows you to check all the sorts of plate you could want. Don't forget that you can use numbers in there now.

VN9SEC is available ($495)

BTW: Congrats on the 100 posts lolo. This thread is just over.

Hey mouce, my powersteering is prectically gone and I though I needed some more fluid but the tank is full, do you know why this can happen.... also Im leaking coolant at the front bottom bit of my engine near all the belts... actually just under the lowest pulley...do you have any clue as to why this is happening??? Im stumped....
Also thought I'd guide us back on topic lol... this thread aint dead yet BOOYAH

Could be blown seal in the pump, maybe it could be too much transmission fluid in there :) ZING!

Nah...seriously...there could be any number of reasons for it to feel a bit strange. Could be that the pump has seen better days, could be a problem with the rack...who knows. Start the car and get a mate to turn the wheel slowly from side to side (never going all the way to full lock) and see if the pully is spinning properly and that there are no strange noises.

Best to do the test on grass or gravel as 'dry' steering tyres is never a good thing.

As for the 'water' leak, could be the oil seal behind the harmonic balancer. Are you sure it's coolant?

LMAO I'll give it to ya... ZING!
Maybe I should replace the whole power steering assembly... Is there anything tougher I could replace it with or do I have to get it custom made, cos the hillclimbs and supersprints are putting a massive amount of strain on the steering...you cant touch the tank after a 20 minute run, thats how hot it gets... and I've heard of later model assemblies melting or seizing up after a half hour on the track....not pretty!
And yeah I'm sure its coolant... unless ofcourse there is anything else in the engine bay that is green and watery lol

There's a thread (on another forum) about a guy who was looking at putting a power steering cooler on his VN...it's possible but it's bloody difficult due to the pressure that everything there operates under.

I think you'll find that even if you were to go hard in a straight line for 20 minutes, not only would you hit the top speed that a VN can, but the p/s tank would heat up quite a bit, just because of the heat from the engine. You've got to realise that EVERYTHING under the bonnet gets hot try touching your alternator after 20 minutes!

I do timed runs on the road from Mt Beauty to Falls Creek in the summer (hold the record for it too), and everything under the engine gets warm, but not crazy hot.

I've never heard of any of the racks/pumps seizing up on the track because of heat. I've heard of a few that die because they are spun at high speeds for too long, so maybe an underdrive pully would be a good move. A larger pully will cause the insides of the pump to spin slower, causing slightly less stress.

As for a stronger assembly, you could always move to the non-power steering setup which was a factory option on the VN (believe it or not). There's less things to go wrong there, and on a track that's always good.

Green and watery huh? Sounds like coolant...I'll have a look at my engine tomorrow at work and let you know if I can think of anything. I've also heard that a cracked timing chain cover could lead to a coolant leak but I'm not 100% sure on how.

Could be the water pump, but if it's the lowest pulley? That's the crankshaft pulley/harmonic balancer. Water pump is up the top.

Had problems with your cooling Johnny?

Cooling problems...Hell Im on my 2nd thermostat, 2nd water pump, 3rd radiator and always got my eye on the bloody temp gauge... water pump is 2 months old, if its stuffed I'll just get one of those Electronic Water pumps... also saw a VX hit the wall leading onto the straight at phillip island, tank got sooo hot that the little plastic dipstick attached to the bottom of the cap melted, clogged up the system and bang... also met Eric Bana and saw him spin his porsche 944... pretty **** driver for a regular racer, anyway how did I get onto Bana... lol I love dropping names

The steering got so hot that it melted the cap? HOLY CRAP!

I still can't help but wonder if it's because of the engine heat or if it's the heat from the p/s pump. There might be something to it after all.

It blew up outside a cop-shop? That's a classic. Why were they not happy with you? It's not like you did it on purpose.

I'm starting to get the idea that my VN is rather unique in that (touch wood) the cooling system hasn't caused any headaches yet. I'm going to replace all the hoses, the thermostat and the tank coming into summer (because the tank is 18 years old and has a few small cracks on the outer layer) and I don't know if the thermostat has EVER been done.

Anyone got any tips on what else to do while I'm at it?

yeah get a 160degree fahreneit thermostat instead of the 190degree ones, just to be on the safe side and after that make sure the temp gauge is properly calibrated lol I almost installed a cryogenic spray kit to my bloody radiator and make sure the bloody system gets a good flush and all the air is out of it or youre gonna be in for a hell of a headache... apart from that I dunno... thats about all you can do without gettin an intercooler or somethin i guess

Intercooler??? WTF? It's naturally aspirated! I've seen those CO2 spray rings for the coolers, be damn handy to have on a track car. Then again, setting up water injection would probably be better in the long run.

I've actually thought about the cooler thermostat, is there any real advantage to them? Other than keeping the engine temp down a bit? As for the temp gauge, I'll probably end up jamming another three gauges in the cabin somewhere (to go with the extra three I have already), I've got Vac, Volts and Amps. I want to add oil pressure, oil temp and water temp. It's surprising just how much the extra gauges can help you keep an eye on the condition of the car. I don't know how I managed without the three I already have.

I can wire gauges in no problem, I've actually got the three that I mentioned on either side of the wheel, so I can see them through the bus wheel that we have.

The other three may/may not go under the head unit, I'm thinking they might actually end up around the outside of the instrument cluster.

I used to have two of them on the pillar, but that just looks crap on a commodore. Well...I think it does.

lol...i like them built into the dash, it might just be me but i like an open tidy cabin. I didnt mean the guide is on wiring it, the guide is on how to build a facia just for your guages...so that they all fit in that hole of doom...

I used to have the gauges there at one point too...so I know it's not hard to do it, I just prefer having them in line with me. I want to look down and be able to see needles pointing in the right spot without having to look around the cabin.

If I can be stuffed I'll post a pic of the gauges I do have already, they don't clutter the cabin at all which is really nice, just because of how/where I've got them mounted.

Thanks anyway, they may end up there yet, if I can't find anywhere else to put them.

I don't mind that little hole under the h/u. I did find a little frame at ricerbarn this afternoon actually, it was a little metal facia for three 2" gauges each one more angled towards the driver as you get further away. Not a bad piece for only $30. It's a single DIN in size, so it would fit under there a treat. Fiberglass would look better, but this would be easier.
