Problem is they look crap. Not to mention the fact that the switch is usually only on and off, I need something that's going to be at least 3 way, maybe 4. Anyway...when I have it all setup, as I said I'm going to build an electronic switching circuit, that way I don't have to worry about anything other than a single button, and I just use it to scroll through the chips.

Oh...Ohh...I know...When I get the carputer all up and running I can build an interface for that so that when I want a different chip to run, a click of a mouse and it can switch it for me. That sounds much geekier, I like that one.

lmao...geekier the better :P
My dads best m8 who is an airline pilot, HATES having guages all over the place, so he designed a touch screen interface just underneath his head unit. It is just a picture of his car, when he presses and holds it spins the picture, and if he just presses a part of the car, temps come up, pressure, and stuff like that. So if he presses the boot, options come up (would you like to open/lock the boot) and it gives him the pressure and the temp in the boot. If he presses his engine bay, all sorts of goodies come up, including shutting certain things off and turning certain things on...cost him a pretty penny but it looks fawsome (thats fu**ing awsome)

He sees an old man and says “See we’ll part with your hard,
Earned cash or rest in peace we can start with your heart.
Some girl steps not afraid she’s gonna cop it sweet,
And gets decked before she made it even on her feet,
The old man leaped to her aid and to his horror he’d,
Thrusted his chest into the blade of his robber s piece,
He grabbed the wallet, dropped the knife as he fled the car,
Concerned about the loss of life he’d never went this far,
What’s done is done, he’d got the prize and he’d spent his half,
Of two dollars in change and a pension card.

I like the sound of that touchscreen system, but I'm the type of person who likes to have the gauges there all the time, that way with a single glance I can check the entire status of the car and just about all it's systems. Coming home from work a few months back, I noticed that idle was way rougher than normal, but she was fine once I got her moving. No warning lights or anything, but I noticed the ammeter was having a bit of a spaz out...changed the alternator over and presto...all better.

I do intend on having the ability to bring up some stuff on the screen (a/f ratio, MAP, MAT...) but for the most part I like real gauges.

I know someone who mucked around with an interface (home built of course) and a whole lot of servo motors they set up the entire heater control/air conditioning/cooling system to run from their computer, click the mouse the a/c comes on, dial in the temperature you want and it moves the heater control dial around to keep it at the right temp...it's nuts.

With all the stuff that I'm coming across with the research into making your own memcals, I think that if I upgrade to a VR ECU (it can be done) I might be able to retune the car ON THE FLY. So instead of having multiple chips in there, I'd just have a link straight into the computer and I can dial in whatever parameters I want whenever I feel like it. Problem is that all the programs run under windoze, and it's just not stable enough for me to want to run my car off it ;)

the problem with those interfaces is the more you have there more things that are there to go wrong.

Anywho got things to do, keep me posted on the MEMCALS

That's why I said I probably won't want to do it. It's a nice idea though.

As for the memcals, they are a while off yet, I'm just doing the reading in my spare time. I'm busy applying for jobs at the moment. And I'm also checking out all the binary files from the VN V6 memcals, there are SO MANY DIFFERENT ONES! It's unreal. I always thought that there was two or three, but I've come across a dozen or more. It's a spin out.

Don't worry...the memcal how-to will be a BIG one, and everyone is going to know about it when it hits the forum, but it's a while off yet.

LOL, you gave yourself a tatt. That's brilliant. What was it a tatt of?

So long as you know which end of a soldering iron to hang onto fitting it isn't too hard. But I'm going to suggest going one step further (and this wasn't my idea originally, it came from someone else). Pull the old chip off the memcal and fit a socket so that you can just clip the new EPROM into it, makes it hell easy to change chips if you ever want to.

She might say that she's not pissed, but you can always tell. Hope she's not pissed for too long.

With the soldering...I'll give you a hint...don't grab the end that's at 350degC. Hold the other end. :)

The binaries are on the net, but they take a bit of tracking down and to make sense of them you need the correct definition file for our ECU loaded into a program otherwise you'll just end up seeing a whole lot of un-intelligable crud on the screen. With the right definition file you can view (and edit) just about anything and everything that you could ever want to.

The only problem is, it's so easy to change something and kill your car. There's one magical little table that's so powerful that if you get it too far one way, you'll melt your exhaust, if you go the other way you'll shatter your pistons. It's a fun one. I've already started work on modifying the little things, like the speed limiter, and the rev limiter. I just found out that my current memcal starts to slow down the fuel delivery rate at 4500rpm, no wonder it feels like it hits a brick wall! Redline is at 5600rpm! My memcal won't let me run past 5200rpm at the moment. Probably a good thing that, being an 18 year old engine and all, but still...the lower limit is just too low.

As for getting it all working, I can get multiple chips physically stacked and running, that's not the hard part, that's just 10 minutes with a soldering iron, the hard part is actually tuning them, I've spent all my spare time for the last 10 days reading stuff, and looking at examples of what other people have done, and it's doing my head in...I'm only just starting to get my head around the basic parts of it. I think that the how-to is going to be the longest single post that will ever be posted on this forum. The disclaimer I'm going to have to put at the bottom is going to have to be massive. The potential for things to go wrong is huge, the benefits of getting it right however make it worth while :)

Anyway trizo, what would you like your memcal to do for you? I could make it so the cooling fan is on all the time LOL. What would you like the top speed limit of the car to be (keeping in mind that at best it's good for about 285 if I extend redline a little bit)? Would you like to have it limited to only 130kph incase you lend it to someone? Time to start dreaming :) Let me know what you're thinking and I'll look into how to go about it.

I've just finished helping my g/f and one of our mutual friends move. God it sucked...neither of them wanted to rent a moving truck :(

Moving the g/f wasn't too painful, between the two of us, we managed to move everything using a Rodeo, a VN (YAY) and a Lancer. Moving our friend in however...a VL commodore (with a massive box trailer), an early 80's gemini and a Dihatsu charade...it took three days. Seeing and hearing the charade was the funniest part, fully loaded (couldn't see out the rear) the poor little 1.3L 3-cylinder motor was really struggling to make it up the hill.

Thankfully there was plenty of pizza and beer afterwards. And when it comes time for me to move in there, they can both help me move all my computer gear, and all my car stuff ;) They're gunna be sorry!

Best of luck with the move mate, hope it all goes well.

LOL...everyone grabs the wrong end once, just by mistake...twice is forgivable if you're under stress...but it's a really quick way to learn.

Might have to put together a how-to solder tute as well :)

Sounds like it's going to be a long night for you johnny.

17? Bloody hell...and you just went and spent $21000 on your car?

Not only am I feeling old (22), but I'm feeling fairly poor too :) Since I have had to scrimp and save to just PLAN to do my suspension and that's only going to be $1500. I can't wait to get full time work, it's not like I'm not applying for the jobs, there's plenty out there, today alone I applied for quite a few. I spend about 5 hours each day hunting for them...I guess I've just gotta be patient.

Trust me, I know jobs are hard to come by...over the last couple of weeks I've applied for more than a dozen jobs, of which I have been more than suitably qualified...the rejection letters have started to roll in already. Telling me that for whatever reason the position has either already been filled or the position has not been available.

The worst part is that just about everyone asks for 'experience' with certain things, one thing that everyone seems to ask, and no one can answer: How the FU&K do I get experience when no one will give me a freaking job? I'm lucky with the job that I've held for the last 7 years, it's given me experience in lots of usefull fields...but what about everyone else out there?

Ouch...I thought I was having a hard time of it. You beat me hands down there.

Might sound crazy but have you thought of starting your own business? I used to do a LOT of freelance IT work and was never low on funds. Don't know why I ever got out of it...I used to be able to make $75/hr (CASH) for database design, working at home, with no real deadline to worry about, free to work whenever I had the time. The majority of my work was IT security though (ex-hacker, it tends to stay with you), I used to do security work for a couple of schools in the area.

I would have thought that you'd be able to get a job with those certs under your belt.

I decided to get out of the life after I had a few phriends of mine go to jail for a few things. Getting out of it was one of the smartest things I ever did.

It was fun, it was interesting, and it kept my mind active and focused when school work became too boring. I'm glad that I still have the skills, they do come in handy from time to time (when friends forget passwords to computer/documents I can help them out), but I don't set out to access things that I shouldn't. The risks aren't worth it.

My biggest piece of advice with it all...if you want to get into it: Don't. I've seen too many people lose their future because they got caught. You think it's hard to find a job at the moment...try finding one when you've got a criminal record for computer crime.

Just for the record, I got out before I did anything stupid enough to get caught for. I'm not saying that any of it was particularly smart, but I was smart enough to get out.

PM sent...yes...back to the cars...

Either that or jobs...

I know you live in Albury, have you thought of moving to either Sydney or Melbourne (Canberra if you got desperate), there's a LOT of IT jobs bouncing around in Melbourne I know that much.

If you're interested in stupid stunts, and don't mind the chance that you'll break a nose, or seriously injure your pride check these guys out if you get bored:

Check out some of the sh!t they do to their 'cars'. I think I've found the definition of 'abuse'. Specifically check out the 'aspire' series of clips and then the 'free car sunday' one where they destroy a ford. :) Actually...come to think of it...they destroy several fords.

Sorry if it's a re-post, I think I mentioned these guys once before, but I'm too tired to care.
