Now, now...while it might be fun to talk about stuff like that, ultimately it's those sorts of comments that either lead to people getting in trouble with the police (and police do spend a bit of time reading car forum websites every now and then), and/or more importantly it leads to all young commodore drivers being labelled as a 'hoon'.
It might be alright for the old-farts amongst us, but as someone who had P-plates on a VN, trust me, it takes a lot of effort to try to shake the stigma attached to being a young male in a commodore.
I'm not saying that revenge isn't a nice thought (and trust me, there have been times when it has crossed my mind), but discussing it on a public forum probably isn't the best thing to be doing.
Also, Trizo, there's a whole lot of things that you can do with dry ice apart from cooling the air charge going into the engine. Lots of fun stuff...mostly destructive, and noisy and messy. :) Still...you've gotta admit that the home made dry-ice intercooler is a damn good idea. I thought that I'd chat about it here to keep the other thread just for performance mods. |

Just checked it out, would it be worth putting up just a one minute MP3 file of you guys doing your stuff so that people can get a bit of a feel for it? Or if someone is a bit of a webdesign geek might even be worth setting it up so that it loops in the background when the page is open. Just something to think about.
Frozen shaving cream in the glove box is kinda old. Don't get me wrong, it's cool and all, but it's old school stuff. A 4L paint tin (full of paint) and a large quantity of dry ice. Open tin, get as much dry-ice in there as you can, hammer the lid back on and run like hell! The very quick way to make a BIG mess.
Of course a VERY small quantity of dry ice in a toilet bowel can look really good. You've just gotta be careful with it, they tend to crack if you put too much in.
And while I'm here, just before the cold & flu drugs wipe me out for the night...Fusion (car audio brand) now have their 2007 range of gear in stores, they are now available through Repco for the first time, the new range has some really nice specs on it, but I'm not so keen on the designs of the amps. So as soon as I heard that they were doing the change over, I got down to the store near my place that has had the old range of Fusion gear for a couple of years now, because (being a pov uni student) I've been scrimping and saving to buy the odds and ends for my sound install, and getting them as I could afford them. I got a nice 4ch amp early this year, and planned on getting the matching monoblock for the subs just before Christmas! I walked into the store just ahead of a strange little man with a clipboard, and stared in horror as I saw that there was no Fusion gear left on the shelves (it had all been sold or returned to Fusion the day before). The only thing left was the small display board with two amps, a couple of subs and a hand full of speakers. The strange little man with the clipboard walked over to it, and started ticking things off the list on his clipboard (it was the Fusion sales rep doing a final count of things). I managed to convince him to let me buy one of the amps that had been on the board, the monoblock that I'd been after for 18 months! He's looked at me, and started to say 'no', when I said three magic words of my own "I'll pay cash". We pulled the amp off the board, found its box burried under a pile of junk and I got a SERIOUS discount on RRP because it was ex-demo and a cash sale. Just so you know the RRP of this amp was $586, I paid WELL less than that. So I'm completely stoked about that.
I know that it means bugger all to most people. But at least the 'stage' amp and the monoblock are the same design. And it's a mad little amp. When I get around to getting the subs and the final set of speakers (as well as all the wood for the install), I'll post up pics on how I did it. A how-to for false floors, sub box building, wiring and finishing a boot install. Anyone interested? |

There's one up there for removing the rockers, pushrods and tappets, how to clean them up and put it all back together. No pictures on that one though, didn't feel like pulling it all apart just to take a picture or two :)
Also, had a look at the detonation sensor on mine, it's a bitch to see, and I have no idea how I'd even go about getting it off. It looks just like a normal sensor, so I got no idea what you were looking at, could have been the bolt to the earth strap. It's tucked away behind a large piece of corrigated conduit in mine (black ribbed stuff with cables in it).
The research for DIY memcals is coming along nicely, the worst part is actually finding the EPROM burner to work with the correct EPROM. I've got all the software and I've had a look at the memcal data that's meant to be in my car...I don't know who and I don't know when, but I know that mine has been 'altered' at some point. There is an electronic speed limiter built in to the memcal, the car will accelerate hard to 210kph, and then creep up to 220kph and that's it. Some of the later ones extended it to 240kph.
I can't wait to get all the gear to do it properly, I wanna see just what's been done to mine. I've also found a few really nice binary files that people have put together to get the most grunt out of the stock V6 that can be had just with a different memcal...looks promising.
And for all that it's going to kill some people, you can't just buy the gear and start going nuts, you buy the gear, download the software, read all the manuals, read all the on-line tutorials, read how all the engine management systems interact, and then you can start making LITTLE adjustments to the memcal, and try each one out as you go.
When I get all my gear (when I can afford it), I plan on having three memcals in the car at any one time, the standard one, a FAST one and a cruise one. With a little dial on the dash to pick which one I want. |

That would be ****ing awsome... Just try going down to a pro shop. When my uncle wanted to make his, he just paid the pros an hourly rate to use their gear. They asked no questions.
Perhaps something to look into. Wasnt that expensive, like $30 an hour or something like that |

Yeah, but by the time I get a spare EPROM (pick it up from a wreckers for two-thirds of fu&k all) and an EPROM burner (about $60-$80 from Ebay, a little more from Jaycar), and I can spend as many hours as I want. I figure that anything more than 2 or 3 hours at a shop and I'd be better off doing it all myself.
Might make it 4 chips, have a 'loan' chip, in case I ever let someone else drive my car (for three years no one but me has been in that drivers seat), kill the power so it can't do burnouts, speed limit it to 100kph and set the rev limiter to 3000rpm. Be mad as hell to have that in there, diable the aircon, and all sorts of other stuff.
I'm quite happy to do simple mods like that for people, but I won't 'tune' the cars for people, since every car is different there's no way that what works for my car will work for someone elses. But all the 'lock-down' stuff is the same. I've got the binary code from about a dozen VN V6 memcals, and they all have good bits and bad bits, what I'm going to try first up is to 'cherry pick' all the best bits and see how it goes. I can disable the top speed limiter completely then I just need to get to the NT to see if I can really hit 272kph :) Also...I've found where the rev limit for the ECU reset is hidden, it can be changed. So for anyone who (like me) doesn't like sitting there revving your engine to 3000rpm for 10 seconds, it can be changed. I like the idea of only getting to 2000rpm a lot more.
Not to put too finer point on it, but the possibilities are endless...there's even code in there for a FACTORY shift-light :) Gotta see where that gets wired up to, that would be a rather nice mod to have. Have a shift light built into the dash, and have it completely custom programed for EACH gear (each gear can have its own pre-defined shift point). Anyone else think that this sounds like fun?
Also...where you at LOLO? Still alive mate? Haven't heard from you in a few days (page and a half I think), nothing wrong with the car is there? |

A simple switch is all that really needs to be used, it's a bit crude, but it would work for testing. Once I've got it all working the way I want, I'll put together a nice electronic circuit with a nice de-bounce board and some pressure switches.
All I intend on doing is physically stacking the chips on top of each other, and soldering all the pins which line up as a stack except the 'activation' pin (I know which one it is, don't worry), and I'll run a lead from the ecu to the common post of a rotary switch, and run leads from each of the switched positions on the switch to the activation pins of each memcal. So when I pull up next to a little rice burner at the lights I dial in the 'nasty' chip, wait for the engine to re-adjust (about 3 seconds from what I can tell), and then vanish :) Get up the road a bit and dial back to the 'standard' tune...and no one ever has to know.
There's actually a way for me to get the switch into the top of my gear knob. Maybe that's a little TOO James Bond though. |
