Okay, the oil leak that was always there has finally gotten too bad for my liking. Well...actually the parents have complained about the stains on the driveway.
I need to get the rear main seal replaced and I reckon I've got two options. First, do the rear main seal and that's it or, Second, get a reco motor and do a swap.
It's a series 1 VNV6 so it goes hard, and I'd like to keep the engine, but I want to know how much it's going to cost to get the main seal replaced as opposed to just an engine swap. Anyone know any figures, or anywhere that can do it and do it well?

The labour is the biggest part of the cost, that much I know. Hell, I had my clutch seal done on the gearbox a few months back. $550 in labour for a bloody $10.35 seal. Not happy. I've got this posted in the Commodore Cruise Club forum as well, and they are all giving figures up around one grand to get it done. Which is what I expected.
How much to do a change over to a supercharged six? Just another option. |

i have a series 1 or a 1.5 if u wanna be picky(1990 model), i replaced my rear main seal when i was chaning my welsh plugs and we figured motors out so might as well do that aswell to save future hastles. being a rope seal they suck but u can get a 2 piece rubber seal from repco etc to replace it with, same as a series 2 seal except 2 pieces because u cant slip a single piece over the end of the crank. where are you located mate? maybe u could do it yourself with a little help from others? if your local then i can offer my assistance. im in eastern suburbs of melbourne |

I'm in the north east, up around Greensborough area, cheers for the offer of help but I'm thinking that if it comes out, I might as well sink some more $$$ into it thinking of getting a little work done on the engine. Not to make huge power gains, but a bit more than the 125kW or so that it's got now. Also, as to the leak, until I've saved up the money to get it done I'll just top up the oil levels when they drop heaps.
It's up for an oil change in the near future so thicker oil should slow it down a bit. Time to get a bottle of HPR30 I think.
I'll keep the offer of help in mind if I decide to try it myself, but at the moment I reckon I'll get a workshop to do it. |
