Hi, I don't know much about cars, but I was wondering if anyone knew how to fix this problem. My VN commodore indicators frequently decides to stop working at times. Like when I pull the indicator lever, it wont do anything, or sometimes it might flash once, then I can hear this weird electric noise (similar to the sound that a 'computer hard-disk struggling with a lot of data' makes) followed by it not working. I have found a weird work around, usually when it happens, when I put the hazard lights on and off, it would start working again, but there are times that even that doesn't work (or sometimes it takes multiple 'hazard flashes').
Does anyone know what is the cause of this problem, and what I would have to fix/replace to get it working. I don't want to spend much on a professional servicing or anything (i'm hoping it's just a matter of replacing some faulty cable or something). I have a friend who knows how to replace parts in the car, I just need to know what to do.
Thanks in advance.

Okay, it could be either of two things (just like most things with a VN)
Most likely is that the indicator stalk is playing up, dirt builds up between the contacts over time, and causes them to play up, but that's usually one or the other not both.
Alternatively it could be the 'flash-can'. This is the thing which makes the ticking noise that you can hear when they are on. This is located just above all the fuses in the drivers foot well...I don't know how much they cost, but you should be able to pick one up fairly cheap from a wreckers just to test it. It's as simple as unplug the old one and plug in the new one.
Try the flash can first, then try the indicator stalk. |
