About a week ago the VN started to get a bit hot in the motor department on the way home. Checked the radiator levels and put about 3-4 litres of water into the radiator plus topped up the plastic water holder thingy
Thereafter every couple of days I had to top up with about a litre of water. Looked everywhere for the source of the leak and could see nothing coming out of the radiator or the pipes running to & from the front of the engine.
Yesterday I discovered that the leak is coming from the pipe that runs to the back of the engine along the drivers side of the motor. I think it is the pipe that runs water to the heater??? In any case it was only a minor leak so I thought it would be good till Saturday morning when I would be able to have a good look at it. Unfortunately it let go last night with steamy results.
Question......is it the heater hose that has let go and how difficult is it to replace, I havent had a chance to have a good look at it as I was planning to do that on Saturday morning.
Thanks

If you had to add 3-4 L of water, I'd seriously suggest that you get the head gasket checked. Because if it was that low, you were sucking more air than water...needless to say, that's not a good thing.
It depends on which engine you've got, if it's the S1 engine and it's the big hose from the radiator then no...that's not the heater hose, that's the top radiator hose...and yes...you need to fix that straight away. If you can wait another four hours or so, I'll have a full write up with pictures for you. I've gotta go and do mine, I just had the water pump supply hose split. Looks like it's a bad week to be a VN! |

91 VN....S2 engine....pipes run from the radiator into the front of the engine (water pump?) oil still looks OK so i'm hoping I've got away without damaging the gasket.
As stated the pipe runs up the drivers side of the engine only about an inch thick. I'll have a closer look tonight (rain pending) and see if I can get away with minor repairs. |

If it goes into some sort of black plastic valve thing that's got three or four hoses coming from it then yeah that would be the heater (well...one of them). It shouldn't be too hard to replace.
I can still do a full cooling system how-to, and I think I might, but by the sounds of it, you got off easy...I've just finished 5 hours of abusing my car. Still...it might help you to read it. It should be up tonight (no pictures though, sorry, I wasn't in any state to take pictures) |
