In the morning while the car is cold, when rolling to a stop at an intersection, there is a whine coming from the car (also happens when the car has been driven alot and is half way on the temp gauge). The auto transmission was rebuilt two years ago, as the previous owner had a receipt for the work from a tranny place I know, cost was $1980. The gear changes are fine, no jerkiness, or missed shifts. Could it be the diff or the tranny and if the tranny could it be serious right now, normal or the beginning of something more drastic. Thanks

Could be the diff, could be the bearings in the hubs, could be the center bearing (along the drive-shaft).
Can you pick if it's coming from the front/rear of the car? |

There's a chance that the brakes need bleeding. Since it's when you're coming to a stop, it could be that the front pads aren't releasing from the rotors completely and you're hearing a bit of a whine as they drag. Could also be the bearings (god knows mine need doing).
Doesn't take much to bleed them, which is good news, so start with that.
After that you should really try to work out where it's coming from (but as with any vague noise it's almost impossible). Is there a chance that it's your alternator, in the weeks before mine crapped itself I could hear a bit of a whine from it as the engine speed dropped (ie. slowing down), and also when the engine cooling fan kicked in (it didn't like having to power the extra load). If that's the case, check your battery and the alternator.
It sucks that it could be so many things, but we'll get there in the end ;) |
