When driving over bumpy driveways or taking corners that are a bit lumpy at an aggressive speed there is a loose sound clunk that can be felt through the steering wheel and brake pedal. Could it be my K frame, bearings in the strut tower or bushes... etc?

Could be many things from the front end. Maybe your ball joints, could be the steering rack (I'd be checking that first), stuffed shocks, shot wheel bearings. Any of the bushes in the front end. I've got the same clunk in mine, and I've just done my rack.

I know that my strut bearing plates are stuffed, as are most of the bushes. Just gotta replace them all and see how it goes.

Get one that's been reco'd properly. As for how much...dunno...I paid to get mine done (*hangs head in shame*) and it cost me $600 to do.

There's a conversion kit that does away with the link-pins all together. It's the same setup as used in the VK and VL commodores where the sway-bar is linked directly to the lower control arm (the hole is still there on the VN). It makes the ride firmer, stops you snapping the crappy link pins on the VN (as they tend to do every now and then), and makes steering just that little bit easier.

You should be able to pick up all the parts you need from a wreckers (get them off a VL, swaybar, and the little bits you need to join them to the control arm). If you've got the money, Whiteline do all the parts you'd need, and they have a serious range of upgraded swaybars too wo you can make it even firmer still.

If you really want to corner quickly, this upgrade is a very important one.

So long as you know how to use a spanner and a jack it's a piece of cake. Total time from jacking the car up to driving away should be less than an hour.

Would it be better to first invest in a strut tower bar?

Strut tower bars are a wonderful addition to the VN, but before you fit that, make sure that the suspension is in good nick. There's no point adding bits to it if the basics are shot to hell.

A good quality adjustabel Whitline or Nolathane one can normally be found for about $150-$180. Stay away from the $30 ones from eBay, they just don't do the job.

How do you know when your strut bearing plates are stuffed?

The strut bearing plates, are meant to be flat and smooth. If they are cracked and/or bulged then there's a good chance that it's busted.

If there are cracks then you can bet that you have stuffed tower bearing plates. Ditto if they are not flat.
