Welcome to the club, hope to see you asking and answering lots of questions.
If it was the fuel pump I'd be inclined to say that it wouldn't start OR idle, let alone idle fast. When the fuel pump dies it dies completely and it won't pump any fuel, so the car will struggle to run at all.
A fast idle like that would suggest to me that there is an air leak somewhere. Check the condition of all of the black hoses coming out of the throttle body. If you feel like getting a bit more adventurous check out the condition of the gaskets at the throttle body and at the intake elbow (where the elbow meets the inlet manifold).
First up though, I'd try cleaning/adjusting the throttle body and IACV (here's a guide): http://www.vncommodore.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=394
The other possibility is that your battery is well and truely on the way out. If the battery is dead and cannot hold charge properly (it might only just have enough to start the car for instance) then the Alternator is going to work overtime getting it back up to the correct charge level. The ECU in the VN monitors the voltage and will increase engine speed to charge the battery more quickly. At idle the alternator only supplies 14A, if it needs more and you're sitting still then it's going to increase the engine speed as it requires. When my battery was dying, it used to idle at about 1200rpm to keep enough charge flowing.
Another possibility is that the ECU needs to be reset (which it will when you clean the t/b) (here's a guide): http://www.vncommodore.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=413

I still say clean and check your t/b and IACV.
Batteries don't always last years and years and years. Mine has only been in for 15 months and already I'm seeing signs that it's on the way out.
If the MAP was on the way out, I'd be inclined to say that the idle wouldn't settle down after a while. It would stay high, and not taper down.
There's a chance that it's the pressure regulator. But I wouldn't have thought that it's highly likely. Go with the t/b and IACV for now. |

| I dont know if this will help but i had problems on the weekend with my vn, it would idle but not rev, first thought was map sensor and that was replaced and made no differance. Then tried fuel pumps which was another obvious thing and the reason it idles was because low pressure pump was still working but the high pressure had packed it in, therefore it had enough fuel to idle but not drive. Glad i had RAC... |

| DAMN! How the hell did that happen? Sounds like there was more wrong with that motor than just a suspect MAP sensor. |
