HELP - While towing up a hill my VN V6 auto started rattling that loud that I thought all my rockers were about to explode, shut motor down, wait a few minutes and all is fine, a few kms later same problem but on flat ground this time, and so on and so on. My question is, what is the cause of the rattle???????
Thanks in advance

| It could be the exhaust rattling on the rear sway bar. I just got my car lowered and because everything has been dropped(except the diff), it has about 5mm clearance from the sway bar. When i go uver a bump or have someone in the back, it rattles like a Motherf**Ker. Maybe because it was under load, it might have been doing that. Was it a HEAVY HEAVY load? |

Thanks for the interest guys, 1. not an exhaust rattle, 2. Does not do it now, let the car sit over night after trip and no rattle, 3.Towing a 5m glass runabout up the Clyde Mountain, 4. Its an auto so no worries about flywheel 5. There was also a large amount of smoke at one stage going up the hill. Could it be the oil pressure reg or spring inside pump, the oil light was on in the car or is the motor just too shagged to tow (300,000km)
Thanks |

Since the oil pressure light was on, I'd be inclined to say you were either low on oil, or the pickup in the sump was kinda blocked.
Given that there was smoke, I'd compression test the engine to check the condition of the rings. Keep a VERY close eye on oil levels. You may need to open the engine to see if any damage has been done, which is not a small job.
If the motor has been looked after properly, 300,000km shouldn't be too much. Sounds like you've had something go fairly wrong. |
