From memory... look at the fat pipe going from the radiator to the engine... Its at the engine end of that pipe inside a cover.

Instructions to remove/install from Gregory's manual
1) Drain cooling system to a level below the thermostat
2) remove throttle body and the inlet manifold adaptor
3) Loosen the hose clamps and disconnect the coolant hose from the thermostat cover
4) Remove the thermostat cover retaining bolt and pull the cover from the inlet manifold. Discard the O ring

Instalation is reversal.

There is also some info on how to check the thermostat.

1) Check the thermostat is fully closed when cold
2) susspend an immerse the thermostat and thermometer in a vessel of 50/50 glyco/water ensuring neither touch the sides or bottom of the vessel.
3) progressively heat the coolant mixture noting the temperature reading on the thermometer as the thermostat commences to open. See specs for correct opening temp. Heat the coolant to 106 Deg C and check the thermostat valve is open more than 9mm.

A thermostat which does not perform as described should be removed.

I recommend buying the manual(i paid $40)... it tells you how to do each part and has pics.

The thermostat was relocated for the S2 engine.

In the S1 engine it's more or less under the throttle body at the rear of the engine bay, to get it out you need to remove the t/b.

In the S2 engine it's on the top of the engine at the front of the engine bay (it's much nicer to work on the S2 for thermostat changes).

Just so you know, if you've got round black fuel rails it's a S1, if they are big silver blocky things then you've got a S2.

For either engine it's not uncommon for the thermostat cover to become a little corroded and siezed into place, so a rubber mallet and a block of wood can come in handy if it's a bit stubborn, in the most extreme of cases you may need to replace the thermostat cover.

Ive got a S1 engine and my engine keeps overheating. I have a crack in my radiator but it will really start getting high when i am stationary. Is this my thermostat? What is it exactly?

There's a difference between 'high' and 'overheating'. It's not uncommon for the temp gauge to reach the half way mark. Anything higher than that and it's getting too warm.

First up get the crack fixed in the radiator, the pressure leak will be causing a few problems. If your thermostat is playing up it can cause overheating, but it would be worth checking and/or replacing the thermostat.

Check the engine cooling fan to make sure that it's working okay. If the fan isn't working that would also cause problems.

this may be a stupid question, but as soon as the engine starts, the fan shoud come on yeah or does it come on when everything starts to heat up? How much would it or should it cost to get the thermostat changed aprox?

NO. As soon as you start the engine, everything is cold (assuming it's a cold start), the engine fan will only kick in when the engine is hot. It will come on when the a/c is used though, just as extra cooling for the engine.

Generally the engine fan will kick in when the coolant hits about 102-103deg C. And will normally cut out when the coolant drops below about 97-98deg C.
