mate this is a quite common problem but my theory is (and I'm putting this in practice with my VN).... drive it till the box goes, and then replace it with a very strong, high performance box....

To be honest it just sounds like it needs a good service. It sounds like some of the internal seals have started to harden, and they don't let the lines come up to pressure quickly enough, which means that the gear changes are rather sloppy, and the engine spends a bit of time free revving in between gears.

It could also be that the torque converter is not locking up the way it's meant to. Which would explain the flat-spots in acceleration, because even though you've got the foot down, it's not locked properly, which means that it's slipping a bit, so there are wasted revs.

Change the fluid in it (if you didn't do it when you did the radiator swap), see of that goes. Otherwise I'd say that it's time to look at a big service, or even a rebuild (with a stage 2 shift kit of course). Either that or save your pennies and go for a manual conversion.

You don't have to pull the motor out to do the gearbox service. You can drop both the auto and the manual boxes out and still leave the engine in the car.

When it comes to working on VN's you have to remember that they are not state of the art technology...they are getting on to 18 years old (mine is anyway), and when something goes wrong, it's often the simple things that you should check first.

No harder or easier than any other car that I've ever known. Actually...it's easier than a couple because there's so much space under there.

Oh yeah, that little rod is there, but so long as you're aware of it, there's no problems. You just have to unbolt things and slide them apart rather than unbolting them and 'dropping' the gearbox out. Once it's all clear you can just drop it like normal.

I'm wishing I had a hoist in my shed, damn that would be nice...oh well...when I'm rich and famous :)

You do need a fair bit of room under the car, but nothing that a good trolley jack and axle stands shouldn't be able to get you, though a hoist would be nice.

Actually, if you're going to go nuts with dropping gear boxes and stuff, get a Gregory's manual, or a Haynes one. Either way they have handy little photo's in them that show just where everything is and how to do it all properly.

BTW: there's no 's' in the name, it's a 'c' on purpose :)
