| When resetting the computer you only need to hold 3000rpm for 10 seconds. And it's always a good idea to warm the engine up, then pull the fuse and reset the computer. Lots of revs on a cold engine is a BAD thing. |

ok guys I found the solution to my apparent bad fuel usage(25L/100km) was to do with my fuel filter. It was blocked so the fuel that needed to go through it couldnt and it need to go somewhere and as the hoses wernt as tight as they need to be it came out through the hose so i was losing fuel while driving. Took me ages to find my problem but i eventually got it. And because the engine wasnt getting the fuel it required that was causing it to run well not bad but S@#t... so hopefully ive cured it. Thanks for all your help guys and ill keep you posted as to if my problem is solved. cheers |

Glad to know that it was something as simple and cheap as the filter, must have been hell blocked to cause that much of a problem though.
And as for resetting the ecu, 1) start car and idle to operating temp 2) stop engine, and pull fuse 3) wait a minute or two 4) reinstall fuse 5) rev to 3000rpm for 10 seconds.

| Yeah i just didnt think it would be the filter as it was replaced not long ago but i should have checked it first. It was very blocked like as in when i blew in it i battled to get any air to come out the other end, then i used an air compressor to blow through it and u should have seen the crap come out. Damn! haha lets just hope this is problem solved and thanks for reminding me i need to reset ecu again.... |

Hey guys, i havent fully tested my car because ive got sick and im on pills so i cant drive. I took it for one drive before i got sick and it went ok but on the way home it started to sound **** again so it still sounds like lack of fuel and my fuel pump has made some funny noises so thats the next thing thats getting replaced. How do i do it??
Also my mate said that my o2 sensor packing in would not affect my car much because of some loop thing. I argued that if the car didnt need it then it wouldnt have it but he said that in the original manual it had something about open and closed loops. im getting the manual to read it for myself but has anyone else ever heard of this?? Cheers and if i dont reply for awhile im sorry but its a battle to do anything but sleep... |

You're mate's wrong on that one...if the O2 sensor packs it in, the engine runs way rich and fuel figures will go mental, in a car that normally runs about 11-12L/100km, I have seen them jump to double that, if not more. Just because of the O2 sensor. Typically if it goes it will jump to about 16L/100km then creep up to somewhere around 24L/100km. But it's noticable.
When the O2 sensor dies, it goes open loop (I'm pretty sure it's open), so that the ecu thinks that the engine is running way lean, so it ups the amount of fuel it injects. Thus the engine runs rich as hell. He's right, there's something about an open loop to it, but it DOES affect the car in a big way. |

Unless someone beats me to it, I'll post up a thread on how to do the t/b and IACV clean out, and reset the IACV and kickdown cables when I get home. At the moment I'm helping the g/f move house so it's all a bit hectic. Should be posted up here by 7PM tonight.
It's fairly easy, so don't fret too bad.
Also...as for spelling. Don't worry, so long as we can all work out what you're trying to say it doesn't matter how you spell it. This club is about cars, not the english language :) |

Hey well ive taken my car for a few big drives now and its performing nicely. Fuel figures seem to be ok but i forgot to record them so i dont know what they are exactly. @ Mouce, thanks for putting up that post i really needed to reset my kickdown cable and now all is sweet. I dont know whats up with my car its good some days and crap the next, there is so many things that it could be but i did find something interesting today while cleaning out my car... i found under the steering wheel in were all the fuses and wires are i had 3 wires going to nothing and a heap of fuses missing. So tomorro its off to auto one for some fuses and some info on the unconnected wires. To everyone that has helped me so far i wanna say a huge thanks your all ledgends, you have saved me alot of money already! Cheers |

Which fuses were missing?
And as for the wires that go no where...which fuse positions are they in? You have to remember that there are some dead-end wires in a few parts of the VN, because they may/maynot have been needed depending on what spec level you got. I know in mine there were a couple of empty spots in the fuse board in the cabin, most were supplied with power, but had nothing on the other side (very handy for neons in the cabin :)).
The fuse position numbers count from the passenger side, let us know which numbers are 'empty' and we'll see what we can tell you about them.
Glad that how-to was useful. If anyone can think of any other how-to guides they would like, just ask, if I can put one together I will. |
