Okay, trizo mentioned the main cause. The solder connections on the voltage regulator on the back of the instrument cluster dry out and crack over time. You actually need to pull the cluster out and have it half apart to check them properly. But based on what you've all discussed so far I'll assume you've done that.

There are also rare cases where for some strange reason the entire cluster just packs it in. The only way to test this is to get down to a wreckers (or find a VERY understanding mate with a VN), and try another cluster. This is also a really convenient excuse to upgrade to a Level 2 cluster (tacho, speedo, temp, fuel) as the L2 cluster just slots straight in. If you wanna do a fair bit of playing around you can get a L3 cluster in (has all the LCD screens on the bottom), but it's not worth it as far as I'm concerned.

If a second cluster still doesn't work then it's time to get up close and personal with a wiring diagram and a multimeter :)

Post up how trying another cluster goes and we'll see how we can help.

Is there a chance that any part of the wiring loom has crapped itself?

It's an electronic speedo, not a mechanical one, and the speed sensor is all part of the vehicles wiring loom. Plus (and I haven't been able to confirm this) the speed sensor feeds into the ecu, because APPARENTLY there is a built in speed limiter at 220kph, the ecu eases back the fuel pressure so you can't go any faster than that.

I've only been able to test my VN, and it pulled all the way past 220kph, so I'm not sure about that one. Haven't hit the top speed of the VN either, and I don't think I will. 272kph is a little too fast for my liking :)

So in short, yeah, it goes from gearbox to speedo, and it also goes from gearbox to ecu. But since it's all electronic, it's all part of the loom, if a wire has either burnt out or just broken it could be part of it.

Yep...272kph...I went kinda crazy one semester break and re-coded one of the cars in Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2 so that it had all the physical characteristics of the VN commodore, I managed to model the VN exec auto, the VN exec manual and the VNSS. Took me a couple of days to get it right but DAMN, they move. Then I went kinda nuts and created one that was an all wheel drive VN :) Also created a VN with 3000bhp, never went too far, too much wheel spin.

So you know, in a straight line drag over the 1/4 mile, an exec will beat a calais every time (assuming they are both stock) for the simple fact that the calais is a heavier car.
