Hey all my power steering fluid keep leaking and yeah I know i should go down to the mechanics and get it fixed, but im just passing time till my new car arrives, so am I able to put some kind of "No more leaks!" or stop leak fluid in it for the time being?

Where does it leak from? I have heard that some people put a small amount of brake fluid into their power steering fluid and it has stopped the leak.
But I don't know about that...sounds fairly dodgy.
If it's leaking from the rack then you may need a new rack to stop the leak. If it's leaking from the bottom of the resevoir then it could just be an o-ring that needs replacing. If it's one of the hoses then, just replace the hose.
I'm not a huge fan of 'aditives' for stopping leaks. I look at it this way, the only way to stop a split seal leaking is to fix the seal. If you make the fuild thicker it won't leak as much, but if the fluid is thicker then everything has to work a bit harder. |

Take it from me......make this a priority to get the leak fixed IMMEDIATELY.
Power steering fluid is bad for all the rubber bits arouns the front of the engine.....radiator hoses, serpentine belts, harmonic balancer rubber, even water pump bearing seals can be destroyed by this stuff....not to mention steering rack end boots and suspension rubbers.
The all turn in to a sort of black jelly and fail....sometimes dramatically....like serpentine belts at highway speeds.
Besides that power steering fluid is damned expensive.
Bite the bullet and get it fixed....thats my advice.....and *blush* my experience.

^^^I can see that an engine drive belt letting go with the engine running at close to 2000rpm (cruising at 110kph) would cause a fair bit of damage.

| lol it does...we did a simulation. we got an old VN and snipped the belt..then let it run at 2500 RPM. ****ing hell i still have a peice of rubber and metal in my shoulder from that. went in so deep they couldnt get it out :P DONT TRY THAT AT HOME! OURS WAS IN A CONTROLED ENVOROMENT AND I STILL GOT HURT |

Just out of interest, what the hell were you doing standing next to an engine when you KNEW the belt was going to snap? Sounds like a small bomb going off.
Because of the pressures that the power steering system operates under, it's quite possible that it's only leaking under pressure, and gravity feeding isn't enough to do it. Also, because of the immense pressure that it would be coming out at, it could be coming out as such a fine mist that you won't see it even if you go looking for it. |

STUPID FINE MISTS! THEY JUST DONT LIKE ME! anywho, stupid leaking thing, i cant find any trace of a lieak at all. another thing, is the resevour CAP supposed to be a tight fit? cause mine just keeps turning and turning and turning so on and so forth. And for your interest, i wasnt standing next to it. I was 37.93 meters away, and it still got me. |

You were 38m away and it still got you?!?!? FARK! That's scary.
The cap is meant to click into place after about half a turn. I wouldn't call it a tight fit, but it's not meant to keep turning. Sounds like that's where it may be venting from. |

yeah i thought so. i went to the wreckers and bought a new cap...and even the new one keeps turning. So im wondering if the thread on the reservour is farked!
is this possible? |

| There isn't a thread as such, there are little lugs that it should clip into. Maybe...just maybe...those lugs are busted. It can happen. |

Hey...either those lugs are there or they aren't, you should be able to see them when you take the lid off. I'll get a photo up tomorrow sometime, if I can't post it on the forum, I'll give you a link to where it is. I'll show you what to look for.

Where's the fun in that? Part of the joy of owning such an old car is that you can learn how to do all this stuff yourself. Hell...my VN is the only car that I've ever owned and in the three years that I've had it I've taught myself enough to be able to help people with a LOT of stuff.
Then again, I'm still at the age (22) where my idea of a relaxing weekend is lying on a cold garage floor covered in crap from the underside of my car with a 6 pack of beer next to me and my car in pieces. Then again, not everyone thinks like that. I drive my car and (to save as much money as possible) I do all the work on it myself, that way if something goes wrong on the side of the road, I've got a damn good chance of getting it sorted out. |

how will putting more fluids of what its leaking stop the leaks? If it was leaking transmission fluid then the fluid its leaking cant plug the leak. If it could there wouldnt be a leak in the first place.
If its leaking fluid A then adding more fluid A cant stop it leaking. If it could then fluid A would have stopped the leak in the first place and fluid A would not need to be replaced
I had to put that in there...it made me feel smart... |

well a mechanic with 30 yrs experience did it for me and explained something along the lines of transmission fluid having a higher density than power steering fluid (which is normally what you have in a power steering rack) therefor being heavier and increasing the pressure in the rack and slightly (very very very very slightly id say) expanding it which in turn make the very very very very slightly loose seals be not so loose anymore and preventing the fluid from leaking visibly. It might still leak as a mist when under extreme pressure which is usually associated with cars that have a lower centre of gravity ie; lowered cars.
Now I had to put that in there.....it made me feel SMARTER...hehe |

| lol...dont u love feeling smarter? But the theory is flawed. You cant stop a leak with fluid...no offence to your mechanic friend. But my dad is a mechanic with the army, has been for 15 years, and he agrees with me, as well as my gf's dad who is a mech, he agrees with me, as does her mech uncle and cousin...they run in the family...fluid cant stop a leak |

A fluid with a higher density can SLOW the leak, but it will not stop it. Being a higher density it takes a bit more effort, or a bit more time to force it through the same hole a lower density fluid can pour through, but it will still get through. That's why when the rear main seal lets go often people put a higher grade oil in the car, because it SLOWS the leak.
Anyway...if a system is meant to have power steering fluid in it, I'd like to keep it with power steering fluid in it. |

This is fun...
If it stops visible leaks, does that mean that there are invisible leaks? How can a fluid which makes a hell of a mess leak and be invisible? LOL. |

| Lol...it cant leak and not be visible. Even if it does escape at a high as hell pressure you would still find oily disgusting surfaces around the leak...there is always a trace...and any leak is visible, if u pay enough attention. |

sprays out under high pressure as a mist, so that happens while your driving, when your not driving the pressure in the pump is high enough to expand and tighten the seal etc but not high enough to spray out... its about loose seals...higher density = increased pressure = slight expansion = tight seals = no leaks.... unless ofcourse pressure increases due to driving = seals too tight = decreased area = liquid escaping through minute openings at very high pressure = mist

Im twisted...im more twisted then a twisted twistie thats being put on a twisted machine...I understand what your saying...and honestly i understand it...but the fact of the matter is, a denser liquid would not stop a leak, mearly slow it down

lol read the explanation carefully, you cannot understand what Im saying without agreeing, I tried to set it out and explain logically that we are not talking about totally stopping the leak and that the main factor in all this is PRESSURE PRESSURE PRESSURE read people its not that hard... I dont use msn anymore btw and im sorry about what your mechanic brotherhood said BUT.. the laws of physics and, logic dictates that LOLO IS RIGHT... sorry but I never lose, cant stand it, will do anything to win lol ;) good luck

I thought you said you failed physics! Actually, the laws of fluid dynamics will show you that the leak won't stop leaving stains on the drive way because a slightly more dense liquid is used. It will slow it, down, I'm not going to deny that. But the same sized hole is there, unless the molecules of the liquid used are bigger than the hole they will still escape through it, even with NO pressure behind it. It may take a while but it will still leak.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitch_drop_experiment
Imagine how fast that thing would have emptied if it were full of water! Pitch is a lot more viscous than water (dur), and it takes many many years for it to drop, but it's still leaking.
You wanna argue the laws of physics...I'll take you up on that...I'm a physicist. |
