Its summer time and the heat is starting to build up, today it was 38 degrees and i went for a spin down the highway and surfers, with the aircon off the car sits dead on or just under half way which is normal, now when the aircon is switched on it sits just above on the notch above halfway when in motion, and when sitting in traffic with a/c on ity sits on the notch above half way which is unusual to me. The car has never given me this toruble before in hot weather and i was wondering if anyone thinks taking the thermostat out for the duration of summer would be a god idea? To my knoledge the water pump is working correctly and its just had a radiator flush with 50% coolant, 50% water. Its also running the clutch fan which seems to be in good shape.
Any ideas or anyone else experiencing this problem?

I wouldn't be running without a thermostat but you may be able to get one that opens a little earlier to bring the temps down a little. Honestly I wouldn't be doing anything.
With the temperature rising this is also increasing the a/c systems pressures and temps. With the heat transfer from your condenser being in front of your radiator this maybe enough to raise the engine temps the way you are experiencing. It does seem a bit odd though that it raises so much on the highway.
I would be looking at testing the opening temp of the thermostat and then depending how that goes either getting a new one or get a cooler one to run through the summer. |
What's the difference between understeer and oversteer? Understeer is when the driver is scared. Oversteer is when the passenger is scared. |

| I was thinking about getting another thermostat, bit colder, but that means ill have to go out and buy more coolant which ive already soent all my cash this week, and yeah its on the highway as well but only when im giving it some boot, on cruise control with a/c on it sits JUST above half. Its mainly in traffic when it goes up to the next notch above half that im worried about, i tested both my old thermostat and the new ont before it went in and it only started to open when the water was about to boil.... what temp thermo would you suggest and whats the stock one ive got (temp that it opens)?? |

Stock should start opening between 87 - 90 degree's i believe and be fully open at 100. You were saying yours was not starting to open until near 100?? That is where i would start if that is the case.

when i put the thermostat in a pan (stove) and heated it up it started to open when the water was starting to boil..... so around the 100 ish region, maybe 90?
have you got the same issue with your temp gauge with the aircon on in qld? ive heard this problem is common in the 5 litres maybe i should just get twin thermos and a bonnet scoop to fix it on the hotter days, its just the stinkers whcih make the temp go up its 7 oclock here and still 30 degrees and muggy as hell.... |

| from what i remember when my car was last going it rose slightly in summer but didn't differ from any other day by alot at all. You have to remember that most oem temp guages are for indication only and are not overly accurate. Get yourself a decent aftermarket temp guage or a multimeter with a temp probe to test your engine temp properly. |

| it could also be the change in the climate we are experiencing because my car has been sitting warmer than usual, it norally sits on 2 notches from cold but lately its been sitting on just under half |
I'd gladly push my holden than drive a bloody ford! |
