i've got the series 1 5L berlina wagon...and the noisiest thing on the whole car is the fuel injection. when i'm going it's fine, but when i'm sitting at the lights it thumps so hard i can feel it through the steering wheel...
i know where it's coming from.... there's a fuel hose that goes over the back of the engine to the injection rail which is clamped onto the firewall. when the injectors fire that hose thumps. and the fuel lines. i can even feel the pulse at the fuel pump down the back.
is there a mod for this? some kind of pressure accumulator maybe? it drives me nuts. i'm seriously considering making a piggyback sequential fuel injector controller. at least then i get 8 quick little thumps instead of one big one.

| have you had a good look at the fuel filter? believe it or not these fucrs can do some crazy sh1t to ya vn! otherwise get a new fuel pump! I dont think piggy backin or doin the dodgy on it is gonna make any difference! You can get aftermarket fuel pumps that make quite a diff, Ie smash more fuel through, but in saying this its always a elimination process! Not a vacum leak? That would be my first point of call considering you say its fuel but vacum will do the same sort of thing (make things clunk)??? Have a look at you t/b gaskett and your iac pipe if there is craks in it , it'll do the rattling of hoses as well! |

i should check the fuel filter, it's been a while. and i've been thinking about an aftermarket fuel pump anyway, i should just bite the bullet...
if i take the hose out of the firewall clip and let it sit it jumps nearly an inch every time the injectors fire. i can hear the noise and put my hand on the fuel line and feel it at the same time. i've replaced the fuel regulator and cleaned the injectors and it just made it worse.
i think it's batch fire, so what i figure is happening is when all 8 injectors fire at once it creates a pulse in the line. if this is what is happening, going to sequential will make 8 small pulses rather than one big pulse.

not yet. i'm still considering how far i should go.
the simplest way is to fit an accumulator like they used to use in the old mechanical fuel injection volvos
http://www.auto-solve.com/mech_inj.htm#MFI05
but that's fixing the symptom and not the cause.
i'm still thinking about possible causes. it might be a fuel regulator issue... if the regulator isnt opening because of a lack of vacuum then fuel pressure will be very high while the car is idling. i've put a new regulator on it but i havent checked whether the vacuum line has sufficient vacuum on it.
i also have a few other minor fuel related issues. it can be... temperamental if i idle on a hill exactly this steep, no more, no less, dropping cylinders and all that and then picking up as soon as i change angle. a wierd one which may or may not be related. it's tempting just to throw the whole lot out and go aftermarket. lift pump, pressure pump, fuel filter, surge tank, servo controlled regulator...but i hate spending money.

its not a normal vn noise
i work for a vehicle transport company and i have only herd this noise once before and it was in a manual vs ute
Next thing im going to check is that the fuel line isn't hitting the body anywhere and that all the rubbers cradling the line are all good |

| the s1 injectors wont fit on the s2, the reason is the manifold/vally cover is bigger on the s2 than on the s1. the injectors dont sit and are to small! |

Get your injectors ultrasonically cleaned and replace the fuel filter as first steps.
From there look at the regulator / pump if it doesn't solve the problem. Could even be the fuel tank itself- don't they have some filling inside that breaks down over time?
I wouldn't worry about modifying anything- its not a typical problem and more suggests that parts are worn. It's just never any fun to find the fault and replace the faulty items. |

| What you need is an inline fuel dampener from Holdens fitted to the return line at the manifold. Can't remember how much $$ and it wouldn't fix 100% but was MUCH better! Check you haven't got a kink anywhere in the return line which will cause a pressure rise and make the problem worse than it is. Also a HUGE fuel filter like the VL style is supposed to help. |
