HI everyone, first post on the great forums here at vncommodore.
I'm looking to buy my first car, and a VN seems to be 1-3 years newer than other cars around the same price and i love commodores.
I do have a few questions though:
What price should i be paying? Right now i have $1500, the average VN price seems to be $1500-$2000, would the VN's for around 1500 be totally thrashed and not worth buying? should i save the extra 500 or so.
How many KM's is too high? I see alot of VN's with 200,000-250,000 on them, i've been told by one person not to bother with anything over 200,000. I'd like to get 13-18 months out of the car before needing any huge repairs.
Is an RAA inspection worth it? Being my first car i have not yet had alot of experience with inspections and repairs so would it be worth havign a mechanic check it out, lookout for common faults and things like that?
Common faults, Are there common problems with VN's that are likely to poke their ugly head up and cost me a fortune?
Fuel, How many dollars of petrol are people chucking in a week?
thankyou for your help, nick

You should be able to find VN's anywhere from $400 through to $7000 depending on what you want to buy. A bog standard executive V6 sedan should be going for somewhere less than $2000. You should be able to find a good one for your $1500.
I don't know who told you to not bother with one over 200,000km, but they need a smack in the head. Most VN's around now days are pushing on towards 300,000km. Most of them have a bit of a hic-up somewhere around 250,000km, some have a fuel pump die, some have coil packs die, some the Crank angle sensor goes...what can I say? They are 18 year old cars, sh!t breaks.
The good news is that with a fairly basic tool box, this website and a bit of spare time there's not a lot that can't be fixed at home (ie. no charge for labour), and parts are fairly cheap.
The amount of fuel you put in depends on how far you drive and how you drive. Driven conservativly out on the open road, I've had my fuel usage down as low as 7L/100km. Booting hell out of it around town with a full load in the boot can see it open out to 14-15L/100km. Most of the time I get around 11.5L/100km around town (so you know: V6 manual sedan, Series 1 engine, 98RON E0 fuel). Given that fuel is costing about 120-130L (remember I said 98RON fuel) that works out to be about 14 cents per km, just on fuel.
Add a bit to that if you want an auto, add well more to that if you are going to try to find a V8, but I would be surprised and impressed if you found a V8 for $1500

Thankyou very much for your info, picked a few out of the paper and will go check them out tomorrow night.
Only other thing i can think of, does anyone know how much the sump gasket cost to have replaced? seems like a bitch of a job to do yourself. |
