Hi all, my power steering has been pretty noisy as of late, just wondering what it could be. Fluid maybe? I havnt been able to check it yet.

If the fluid is low it'll whinge.

If the pump is dead it'll whinge.

If the rack is having problems it'll whinge.

Check the fluid level first, if after that it's still making a whining noise, you'll need to get your rack and/or pump replaced. Since it's started to make noises, it's a good idea to get both replaced and the system fully flushed, if you get one replaced and not the other, it'll shorten the life of the new component considerably.

Dunno off the top of my head, I got my rack replaced a few years back and that was about $600, but that included the labour (back in the days before I did everything myself).

The pump doesn't take much to change. The only b!tch about the entire thing is that you'll need a wheel alignment afterwards.

A new steering rack cost me $440 with labour about 6 months ago.
Don't know how much the pump is, they said my pump was fine

It turned out to be just the fluid, which makes me very happy. Its now almost completely silent.

There's two things to be said here:

1) Thank god it was only the fluid and not something more expensive
2) How did it come about that the fluid got that low without you noticing it?

Well, when i bought it, it did sound like that, just thought it was normal. Over the last couple of weeks its really been bugging me, so I checked the level, there wasnt even any oil on the mini dipstick thing. Once topped up now, you cant even hear it, before it sounded like the steering was goin to collapse.

Make sure you check it again soon, if it's been dry that long there's a good chance that there's a fair bit of air in the system, as that bleeds out the pressure will drop. You may have to top it up again soon.
