Start with that, it's a good one to get your hands dirty on first up
Then look at a high flow washable air filter, coupled to a Cold Air Intake.
A cat back exhaust system sounds good and can normally be found for $250, 2.5" sounds okay, I have a mate with a VR ute that's got a 3.25" and it sound tough as hell.
Wait a little longer and I'll have a 'how-to' on making your own engine management chips.
It really depends on how good you are with the tools, personally I'd have no second thoughts about getting a full DIY supercharger kit and bolting it all up and tuning it myself. But I know some people who are scared to change their spark plugs. It just depends on what you're comfortable doing.
Go for the high-flow washable panel filter with Cold Air Intake (get a CAI for a VS supercharged V6 from Holden). Clean your throttle body, make sure it opens to 100% and reset the kickdown cable. Set your tyre pressures to about 32psi all around as well, that will help a bit.
If you want it to sound a bit tougher then a cat back system would be a good cheap easy way to do it, but don't expect any performance gains from it, cat back systems are just about sound. |

(2.5" and 3.25") is that in inches or somthing? lol bout the super charger think ill let the pro's do that.how much are the cai vs super charger. lol i put my tyre pressure on 38psi lol.. anyways ill try the t/b cleaning and ill let you know how i go. b4dn xxxx |

| I have heard mouce that anything bigger than 2.5" on a N/A car is just for noise and actually hinders performance. Am i right in saying this?? |
What's the difference between understeer and oversteer? Understeer is when the driver is scared. Oversteer is when the passenger is scared. |

Given that a LOT of the restriction in the exhaust actually comes from the headers and the cat, anything cat back is just for noise.
So long as you're not going stuipd and getting a cat back milo tin exhaust like so many freaking rice-burners out there, anything up to 3.5" isn't too much of a problem.
If you're going full length then anything over 2.5" and you'll start to drop backpressure too much...HOWEVER...I do know some guys who have had quite a bit of luck running unrestricted exhausts (only in a workshop for legal reasons) and have managed to get massive power gains by retuning them to run without backpressure.
For your average Joe, you need backpressure to keep it all happy. If you're a gun re-tuner it's possible to live without backpressure (or ear-drums), but I wouldn't recommend it.
The VS s/c CAI should be available from Holden for about $60-$70. And 38psi in your tyres...that's getting a little too high. Drop it back down to 32-34psi...it's still a nice firm ride, and fuel ecconomy doesn't suffer too much for it, traction will improve and you're tyres should last a bit better.

Actually, I'm a self confessed nerd.
When I was a P-plater in my VN, I was sick of being hassled by the cops, so I made sure that I knew all the relevant laws backwards. Nothing sh!ts a cop more than having a person on the side of the road quote him/her the exact wording of the Australian Road Safety Act.
I have a couple of minor mods on the car (like a pod filter and so on...) and when I got pulled over for a roadworthy, and I was about to get booked for the pod, I pulled out the e-mail I got from VicRoads stating that Pod filters are legal provided that the car still meets EPA restrictions for noise and polution. He couldn't argue with that, so he had to let me go.
In short...anything can be done to cars so long as you know that it's legal, and can prove it while standing on the side of the road and you have to be able to prove it without being a smart arse or the cop will just ping you for something else.

lmao... cpa ,dpa, rpa... I think u mean the e.p.a (enviromental protection agency) as far as I know its not illegal not to have a muffler but it is illegal not to have a catalytic converter!!! as 4 95db well sounds about right ,, but dont forget depending on the copper ,wat sort of day he/she has had or the amount of doughnuts eatn!! 95db can go to 65db depending on there mood ,they could sting you with all sorts of sh1t ... a yellow sticker is a favorite of the coppers around here, (w.a) even if the car is all legal they know they can slap a canary at the clik of the fingers... either way they know that the poor driver has to go through the hassle of going over the pits there for making there day better.... I guess what I'm saying is as long as you know what your doin is legal well theres not much to worrie about ,, but that doesnt mean that that johnny blue bum is gonna be nice.....
p.s there are a few good coppers out there dont get me wrong but personaly i'm yet to find 1!!!!! ;) |

Okay, I've just looked at the EPA regulations, and they are as follows
For vehicles manufactured before November 1st 1983 the maximum exhaust SPL at full load cannot exceed 96dB(A) For vehicles manufactured after November 1st 1983 (So this is where the VN belongs) the maximum exhaust SPL at full load cannot exceed 90dB(A)

| I BELIEVE that the noise laws are uniform across the country, I'd like to get some confirmation on this though. |

I called into the local cop shop and they told me to go speak to VicRoads (since in Victoria they are the regulatory body that handles all of that sort of stuff), went into VicRoads, got the contact details of the guy I needed to speak to, shot him an e-mail stating that I wanted to put a pod filter on the car but wanted to have proof that it is not illegal to fit one.
I got an e-mail back with an official statement in it.
So go and speak to your local coppers, they'll be able to point you in the right direction. |
