When I push the aircon button, nothing happens. I assume I need to get it "regased"... So usually how much would it cost to do that?

Don't be afraid to start a new thread for a question. It's better to start a new thread than re-birth an old one.

First things first, start the engine, pop the bonnet, turn on the cabin fan and then hit the a/c button. 0.5 seconds after you hit the button the engine cooling fan should switch on, and the a/c compressor should engage.

The a/c compressor is the bottom pulley on the passengers side of the engine. If neither of the items engage then I'd be inclined to say you've got a problem with the a/c switching circuit rather than the gas. If it turns out that you do need to get the system regassed, don't be cheap about it, find out why the gas has leaked out (probably the seals in the compressor have shat themselves), and get those fixed up too. Otherwise you'll need to keep getting it regassed regularly.

A/c systems are sealed systems, under normal circumstances they shouldn't ever need regassing.

I had a similar problem with my VN aircon. For the short answer, a switch under the bonnet, near the bend in the engine air intake pipe, on the side of the black cylindrical steel aircon accumultor, had been knocked loose. Squeezing the electrical connectors together and fixing it so that it wouldn't work itself loose again, solved the problem.

For the long story... It was an intermittent fault, i.e. the air con would sometimes come on when I did a sharp left hand turn., but otherwise never worked. I looked at the wiring diagram in the workshop manual and saw that there are four switches in series that must all be in the closed position for the aircon to work. These are the interior switch (in the car to turn the aircon on and off), a high pressure cut-out siwtch, a low pressure cut-out switch, and an accumulator level cut-out switch.

I found that the accumulator level switch (passenger side of engine bay next to the bend in the air intake near the throttle body) had been knocked loose by the air intake tubing. When I had the car running with the interior aircon switch on, and I wiggled the electrical plug on the accumulator siwtch, the aircon compressor would engage and the aircon worked nicely. The cause was broken engine mounts, that had caused the air intake tubing to break away from it's rubber mount, which had then repeatedly knocked against the aircon accumulator switch plug, that had caused a poor (intermittent) connection.

Anyway, I squeezed the electrical contacts on the plug tight again and cleaned up the electrical spade contacts on the switch, and wrapped it all in rubber self-cementing tape, and then cable tied it onto the switch so that it won't come loose. I had to destroy much of the electrical plug to get at the connectors, as the rubber plug surround had perished from the heat and become brittle. But by making it much smaller, it is now not so close to the air intake piping so shouldn't get knocked. Ideally I need to replace the engine mounts and the air intakee pipe support mount, to really prevent it happening again. But for now it works great.

I found one other switch in front of the radiator on the passenger side, but that one seemed ok. Not sure where the third one is.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Sneezy

Don't you love some of the dodgy connections that you find in the mighty VN? Well done on tracking that one down, nice to know that I'm not the only one tragic enough to go looking through the circuit diagrams trying to find possible problems.
