manual steering was fitted to some export Commodores.
But does any one know how to fit manual steering to late VN

Welcome to the club, and it's nice to see that people are willing to do something 'different' to their commodore.

First up, changing the rack over isn't too tough. Swapping to a 'manual' rack is a piece of cake, unbolt the old, and re-bolt the new.

The tough bit will be dealing with the power-steering pump. There's a few ways you can do it:

1) Find a shortened belt, one that's designed for the manual steering system. And do away with the pump (leave it there, but don't run the belt to it).

2) Find a blown p/s pump, it allows you to run the standard belt, and will act as an idler pulley, just make sure that the p/s tank is empty.

3) Find an idler pulley, it'll do the same thing as the blown p/s pump, but will make less noise, might be a bit harder to find though.

Manual steering was actually an Australian option for the VG utes. So it was available, might be hard to track down a manual rack though.

i did not think about the belt situation, i expect that there would be the same belt on a power steering pulley fitted to a bearing.I had this a a VL with manual steering.
I was able to get a quote from the local wreckers but they wanted $350 changeover. I did not expect it to be this hard.Maybe I should consider it.

Check out V6 Vengeance on the other commodore forum, they fitted a VL manaul steering rack to their VN, but had to use the VL rack they had to buy the intermediate shaft from Holden as the VN one wouldn't mate up to the VL rack. I think from memory the shaft is from the 2L export VNs. Have the answer in an old magazine here somewhere.

ive been asking around at wreckers. They say that the vn manual steering rack bolts straight on and was not 100% sure if there was a width issue in the track. BUT getting the rack to the steering column , is the next hurdle .... Thanks FXST01 I will take your suggestion ....

i think... not 100% sure, but i think i've heard of some hot rod places with kits for power to manual steering, for when they put the v6 into some old school hot rods. As i said, im not 100% sure, it was a few years ago, and it might have been replacing the air con. I just remember it was one of these, to tidy up the engine bay.

manual steering is kinder to the front end. Over many years of use manual steering will not have to face the upkeep of power steering. So i suppose im being economical with out power steering you get increased life of suspension components. tyre life is up. weight of the car is down a bit. economy up a tiny bit. My car was purchased from a freind who really looked after the car and had it 10 years , but still had to face a rebuild of the rack. on top of that with higher tyres pressures power steering is not really necessary, but of course power steering is nice to use .......

Try to get on to one of your state Hot Rod clubs or early model Holden clubs, they'll point you in the right direction.V6 engines are becoming a common swap into some Rod engine bays But be prepared for them to laugh and ask you why are you wasting your time.
