What happens when you leave your oil level well above max? I can smell a bit of burning oil after driving.

If it's a long way above max then you run the risk of the crank 'whiping' the oil. If the oil is high enough then while the engine is running the crank can slap the oil, if this happens then the oil becomes airated (sp?), if this happens it's not good for your engine, as the oil cannot do it's job of lubricating the componants properly, it's also not great for your oil pump.

If you do suspect that you're well over max, don't drive the car any more than you absoloutly have to (ideally don't drive it at all) and take out the excess oil in any way you can. If you don't you can look forward to the prospect of having a seriously buggered up engine.

Well...it will leak a bit, so you were right there...but the bigger problem is the damage it can do to your engine.

Over fill it enough and you can blow a lot of bits of your engine to hell.

Just because you don't see anything going wrong doesn't mean that it's not happening. Get it back to the right level as soon as you can.

I know a guy who actually managed to do a head gasket by over filling with oil. The oil got frothed up, the engine wasn't getting lubed properly, so it over-heated...pop!
