My mate just told me his VQ 5.0L Auto Statesman made a loud bang/pop while driving in town, next thing is tacho is all over the place but the car runs fine. Almost home and things arnt looking good. Turns engine off then starts and the the engine fan starts then dies and everything thing looks and sounds dead. Opens the bonnet and there is oil everywhere.
What might of happened?

Red oil or black oil?

If it's red oil then you've blown a tonne of transmission oil all over the place, and you will need to find the leak, fix it and get the auto-trans serviced. The reason the tacho will have been a little nuts is because when the trans-fluid is low the transmission slips.

If it's black oil (engine oil), I'd go looking for the blown gasket. Not sure about the V8, but splitting a rocker cover in the V6 will spew oil everywhere. Just a few thoughts.
