Well I finally fixed a small issue with the VP after having it run like a dog for a few weeks and heaps of money with spark plugs, leads and some other stuff, I finally took it to a mate who looked at it and we discovered that it was one of the twin coils had finally died.
The way to know if the coil is dead, is to leave the car idle for a while, and then turn it off and feel the heat of the coils. If the coil is hot, then it is gone and better to get a new one. Also to conirm it, get a spark tester and hook up a lead and turn the motor on.
There was no indication apart from when you placed your foot down on the pedal the back end would shudder and sometimes while in park it would back fire. I had taken the car to a mechanic who said it was the fuel injectors and it would be better to replace them.
Well $46.00 later and the new coil was in, and it is just like the car was when I first go it. The power is back and I am able to spin the wheels on take off again.
Just thought that I would share that as most places will tell you that you need to spend all this money to get it fixed.

| There is another way to tell if the coil pack died by using a timing gun. The way is to use the attachment that connects to sparkplug 1 is to hover above the pack. The one that does not light up is dead. I know I've have the same problem and getting one of my packs repaired as we speak. |

You don't get them fixed, you just replace them as it would cost more to fix them than buying a new one.
For those in Melbourne, I got my new coil from East Coast Auto Spare 912-926 North Road, East Bentleigh. Ph: (03) 9570 6188. I got it via a friend who gets trade price, but I will ask them if they can offer members of this site some sort of discount on the parts.

There are no real way of fixing them. I bought new coils for the VN and once I found one was a dud I returned it and got a new one. The coils or the DFI base (Talking about the round packs) are sealed units and they can not be phyically repaired (That I know of). The only way is to test them and see how it goes. |

ok my vn is running like ass as well i got told by a few places that it was injectors and what not ive also been told that it could be fuel pump hmm replaced last month (not likely) spark plugs (replaced same time) and also it might be pplug leads not sure if they got replaced
my qustion is if from what it sounds like the coil pack 1 of them might be dead does it make your car sound like an untuned 355 stroker and the world is comming to an end but you have like 1/4 of your normal power ???

That is what I went through, Smokey_dj.. Also when you plant the foot when it is humming along you find it runs like a dog, then it all of a sudden goes like the clappers. At idle it should also be missing.
A nice easy way to test is while the car is at idle and in park, remove a lead (not with your hands, but as my mate did, with a plastic lead remover) from the coil pack and see if there is any spark from it. Also you can leave it run for while, and check the temp of the coil packs after you turn off the car. If the coil is hotter than the others, that is normally the cause.

| Very interesting.... a friend has a series 1.5 and he has still the old square coils and the car was bought in 1991. Think either someone changed the coils setup before you bought your car or the car was factory fitted. |

| Yeah, sometimes the lead to the O2 sensor dies (or the sensor itself) and it will run like crap. It can't adjust the mixtures to make it run smooth, so it just runs the 'default' values. It runs, but it isn't pretty. |
