I noticed that my surge tank after turning off the car can be loudly heard boiling inside. This seemed to have gone away until recently when i noticed that my coolant was down that i topped it up to the seem line again. Now after driving the car and the engine is fairly hot that you can hear the coolant boiling violently inside the surge tank. Is this normal?

| mine used to do that but my water pump was screwed, but when i replaced it it stopped, maybe u have a small leak which releases the pressure, check for any small coolant leaks. |

| So it wouldn't boil if there was a contained pressure in there then? |

There are two ways to raise the boiling point of the 'water' in the cooling system, the first is to use the correct coolant (50% mix of water and good quality coolant concentrate), the second is to run a 'pressurised' system, as the pressure increases so does the boiling point of water.
Get your system professionally pressure tested, this will show any leaks that shouldn't be there, also make sure that you aren't running straight water in there, it's really not good for the engine. |
