just wondering if anyone could help me. My vn in running perfectly and now its time to do a couple of mods. i just wanna know about pod filters. do i just remove the airbox and put a pod on the end of the intake pipe? i've been told to make a air box but how would i go about that? or would it be better to get a better panel filter and a cold air intake from a supercharged v6? thanks

A K&N panel filter and a CAI is a damn good combination, but I like the sound that a POD gives.

A POD bolted on to the end of the intake pipe, will do nothing fancy except sound a bit louder. A POD in a box with a CAI piped into it will give you the sound, and the full benefits of a POD filter.

Making the box isn't too hard, wait until you can find a nice chunk of sheet metal and just work out the rough shape you want it and start folding.

If you're not sure about it, a good panel filter and a CAI is going to be pretty well just as good.

Both will cost about the same, each one will give similar results, and each will take about the same amount of time. The only differene is the fact that the POD will sound a little louder (though if it's in a box you probably won't even notice that). Go with which ever one you're most comfortable setting up.

The stock airbox will need a little bit of work with a hacksaw blade to get the CAI to fit, but it's not too bad. If you're really against doing that you can just buy the matching airbox for the CAI, but to me it's a waste of money. It doesn't take long to make the hole large enough to get the CAI in properly. Once you get the CAI you can see just what needs to be cut, then you can work out if you want to cut it (easy and cheap) or buy the new airbox base (lazy and more expensive).

ok, for all u people out there that are considering an pod filter, as opposed to a normal intake, consider this:
*the pod filter is sucking air from the engine bay, which is hot and does not combust as well as cold air.
*yes it sounds cool(i know coz i had 1 on my car 4 about a week till it was ripped off), but a cold air intake that sits on top of ur radiator sounds eaqually cool, adn has the added bonus of sucking in cold air, which combusts better.
now coupled with a k&n or high flow air filter, the power again isnt huge, but its noticeable at idle.

its up to ur personal preferance, but theres the facts.

Uh...as explained in a couple of other threads, it takes a little bit of work, but a pod filter housed inside a custom airbox with a CAI piped into it gives you the best result you can get for your intake without going for forced induction.

As for the 'facts' the basics are right, but a lot of it depends on the exact setup that you run. If you don't mind butchering your car it's quite easy to drill a large hole and drop the pod down into the wheel arch which gets around the hot-air problem.

AS mouce said... you cant go mouthing off about pod filters... common knowledge dictates that a pod+ custom airbox+ CAI equals the bestbreathing without forced induction

ok, sorry all, i can see where you are coming from, but you would have to agree that for a simple solution to these ideas, just a pod filter(no modifications, ie-wheel arch holes, costom pipes-which are good dont get me wrong), it would be a better idea to go look on ebay fo a cold-air intake, and slightly modify your box, or get a vs box, coz they already have the elongated hole in them.
i go my cold-air intake for $68, and that is a great performance upgrade. sure not a huge surge in power, but a cleaner idle, better take off and so forth.

it all comes down to personal choice, if you like the look of pod filters, go for it, they sound cool, but only on higher revs.

yeah i guess, but the proven intake path is pod box CAI so if your gonna dish out money to get your car goin, do it right

Actually, pods typically sound their best under moderate revs with the engine at full throttle, and under load. Usually doing about 60-70 in third and booting it...gives a really nice roar.

Hey, I also want to add a pod filter or cold air intake or new panel filter. I just want my car to A: idle smoother, B: have a nicer sound and most importantly C: not chew as much petti!
What is my best option? Does the pod fltr make a drummed out sound or more of a exztractor sound? Cheers, guys.

Type it in on google image, they are just performance filters except they are in a cone shape and give a differant sound to the panel. They are hollow and give a very distinct sucking noise.

Actually, due to their design, the pod filter allows a much higher air flow rate (if needed) by the engine, which is really handy in forced induction setups. Also, because they CAN handle much higher air flow rates, it doesn't take as much power from the engine, in N/A form, to suck air through it, which can reduce fuel usage marginally.

If you're considering a pod or a CAI, do what I've been suggesting for a while, do both. Make up a custom air box for the pod to sit in, out of old sheet metal from a computer case would be fine, and pipe a CAI into that. This setup gives you the advantage of both of them, the only draw back is that it takes a few minutes to build the box.

If you're after a smoother idle, pull the throttle body off and clean it out, also, make sure you give the idle air control valve a good clean up too.

If you're after a super smooth idle, get an ecotec engine, the buick will never be that smooth.
