I have today been doing some maintence on my 91 VN(replacing radiator fluid, spark plugs done so far) and now i am trying to do my fuel filter and i know that before you do it you remove the fuel pump fuse and start the car until it runs out to get rid of the fuel pressure, but when i first removed the fuse and started it; it stoppped so then i checked it by turning the key and bingo it started again. Removing the fuse now is doing nothing and the engine wont cut out like it should...Please can anyone offer me an explanation as i am P@#$$D off about that and off the topic i found 2 new massive dents in my car from somewhere last night so im angry and this is the last thing i need! cheers guys!

The fuel pump can actually draw power through two circuits in the VN, as a failsafe measure, if the fuse blows for the main power supply, the pump will of course cut out. However the oil pressure switch can also supply power to the fuel pump. So, once the engine has been started, and the oil pressure is up to scratch, it will power the fuel pump as normal. I think if you want to depresurise the fuel lines the way you're going, you also need to remove the engine fuse as well, so that it can't actually start.
The other alternative, and the one that most people use, is get a couple of pairs of vice-grips and wrap them in cloth. Use these to clamp the fuel lines either side of the fuel filter (not the metal part, but the rubber part), then just pull out the filter, pop the new one in, and pull the vice-grips off. You might drip a bit of fuel, but not much. Find a pair of goggles just in case. It's quicker and easier than pulling fuses.

Hey, yeah cheers for the reply i ended up just taking the hoses off slowly and wasting a little bit of fuel and got the other one on without to much hassle but got damn they picked a S@#t place to put it! Im not sure but i think the metal piping has been cut down a bit because the filter on it that i replaced was about 2cm longer than the one i put on there so i had to make a comprimise to have only half of each end of the filter in each rubber hose so yeah the clamps are on extremely tight! Now to see if all the parts replacing has solved my problem! On a side note my god damn radiator coolant was brown so it shows the knob who had the car before me was a bit slack... i couldnt belive the colour it was and the state of the hoses...
As for the dents it was something blue and was done when my boot was open because my spoiler covers them when boot is closed so i would say last night when my sister has friends over... im out for blood but at least you cant see them to much...bloody drunk women! haha |
