hello ppls!
two things for ya
1. I got 89 VN V6 auto (done 204000k). now the gearboix is probaly a bit tired considering age but one thing that i find a bit weird is the reverse. its drives pretty good forward but reverse is horrible. its takes a couple of seconds to grab the gear after shifting and then it seems to be all revs and no go until i give it a bit more gas (3000rpm or so) and then itl lurge with a squeal from the tires :-s. Any ideas?
2. its also very stock and the one thing im hating is the boatlike feelin so itl be getting some springs and wheels, im just not sure on wheel size cos ive heard that 17s can make the ride pretty rough. but i also want to fill the guards up a bit cos the 14 on at the moments are lookin a bit weak lol
any help would be good good
cheers, sam

the trans sounds sick so you best bet would be to rebuild it, if your not cashed up get one from the wreckers, but chances are you will buy another one with problems. as for the suspension, if you get stiff springs and larger wheels its going to be rough, fit some 15's or 16's and it wont be as bad, also a strut brace is one of the best modifications you can do to the vn, it keeps the strut towers parralell for better takeoffs and excellent cornering ability.

If you want to tackle it yourself you can get a rebuild kit for about $70-$100. Providing there is no major damage to gears or reaction shell this is all you should have to fork out. It may be Worn reverse input clutches or a stuck low overrun clutch valve in the auxiliary valve body. Clutch packs come in rebuild kit and it may be as simple as removing the auxiliary valve body and freeing the valve. Is it fine in all other gears?? What does the oil look like?? |

to be honest, your trans sounds like it needs a good t/b adjustment and some new tranny oil/filter,

did you check the auto level with the motor running or whilst turned off? could be the valve body all gunked up but doesnt sound like the 'hard to take off until 3000rpm' problem. get a trans joint to take it for a test run and they will have a fair idea on what the problem will be.

Yes it does while the engine it running the fluid is running through parts of the tranny affecting the level. The procedure to check your fluid is to get the tranny warm by going on a short drive. Park the car on level ground put the handbrake on and put the transmission into neutral. Now remove dipstick and check level. Check it a couple of time to get an accurate reading making sure you wipe it every time.

You have to remove the oil pan from the transmission to access the tranny filter.
