Today I pulled apart the speedo cluster from my VN V6 wagon to fix the odometer and trip meter. Previous owner told me it broke at about 3 years of age, I opened it today to find broken mounts that should hold a stepper motor in place. Some slightly longer screws, fixed that, odometer works great
Guages (speedo, temp, fuel) are a little sticky - I'm tempted to try and oil it with some thin sewing machine oil - anyone had any success in repairing sticky guages?
I think if all else fails, I'll get a level 2 cluster - but I want to cheap out and try and repair this

| level 2 clusters aren't all that expensive. You should be able to pick one up from the wreckers in working order for around $50 |
What's the difference between understeer and oversteer? Understeer is when the driver is scared. Oversteer is when the passenger is scared. |

Got a level 1 replacement... unfortunately he didn't have a level 2, but a ****load of level 3's.
Odo readings ever been a problem for anyone? The old one reads 136k - it broke at about 5 years of age. New one reads 204k - 68k in a year would be quite an achievement for me. Just noticed the odo is mentioned on the pink slip
Might dig around in the old one and see if I can fix it up |

| you can change the odometre reading by removing the cluster, take out the individual units and grab a small flat blade screw driver, carefully go back number by number and you can set it to whatever you want. |
Cheers, Nodg. |

- Disconnect the negative (black) battery lead
- Two screws under the top lip of the dash. Two more screws on either side of the steering wheel just above the fuse box. All 4 of these screws are best seen from the floor looking up
- Pull the dash cluster just behind the steering wheel forward, disconnect all elec leads, and remove completely
- Remove the two screws on either side of the speedo instrument cluster, and pull it out
Done this like 20 times in the last week, rofl |

hmm... so it hasn't even been a week and guess what?
the speedo replacement from the wreckers, well, the odo just broke (same fault as last time)
Huzzah!
An odo to me at the moment is important, because it hasn't worked for many years and I'm not so sure I'm getting reasonable fuel efficiency
I'm going to pull my spare apart and continue to try and fix it |

pulled apart the old one, mechanically it looks fine, just I think the stepper motor is blown. I desoldered it from the pcb last night, hooked it up to my own stepper motor controller, and was unable to make it work.
But, my guages are still sticky - opening up the VDO seemed to cause it. I tried oil, that seemed to reduce the sticking - sorta. Now the speedo is too 'springy', it won't drop below about 5km/h - hah, but thats okay.
Still yet to test the old unit since I tried to fix, will tomorrow
Called the wreckers today, he said he won't accept a return on this fault. Second hand parts, he's not oblidged to offer any warranty by law so nothing I can do :( |

Seems my repairs worked a treat. Tested it today, both of my faults were repaired - sticky guages and broken odometer.
I opened up the one I got from the wreckers and guess what - the problems are identical, broken mounts & minor sticky guages... this time I won't use as much oil.
I might have to write up a good howto on doing this, because there doesn't seem to be one and there is misleading information out there (like don't touch the guage needles - I needed to, for sticky guages fault). Also its very easy to do provided you are careful
