hey guys,
Ive got a vn wagon and im trying to figure out how to fix to horn(because it doesnt work!!) and fix the speedo(it's not working properly) so i can pass rego!!!
can anyone tell how i can fix it all

| With the horn check the wires to the back of the horn also check the fuse. The speedo will more than likely be the speed sender unit located on the rear of the tranny. If you have a mate with a vn try swapping the sensor over with theirs and see if this fixes the problem. If this doesn't swap instrument clusters(alternatively go down to your local wreckers and see if you can borrow them to try or buy them). Other than that i am not sure off the top of my head. |
What's the difference between understeer and oversteer? Understeer is when the driver is scared. Oversteer is when the passenger is scared. |

I pulled apart my horn to find the electrical contacts were rusted over. Scraped them back very well with a screw driver, seemed to improve the horn but it wasn't quite right. Ended up gluing some match sticks to the part of the plastic cover that presses down on the electrical contacts. Works like a brand new horn now
What exactly is wrong with your speedo? Does it stick, irratically jump around, display inaccurate readings or not work at all? Does hitting it fix it?
The horn can be fixed, the speedo is a common fault with the VN/VP series commodore IMHO - if you're having trouble getting a pink slip, take it to somebody who'll turn a blind eye. |

| like vnsvle sed, have a look at the speed sensor at the side of the gear box, also you can get rebuild kits for the cluster /speedo unit! It will either be 1 or the other (speed sensor or cluster )also for your horn same as above but have a look at the connection to the horn unit it self , they have these sh1tty little sleeve plugs that slide of or corrode over time! If you are going for a rego pass it pays to do things right, at the end of the day it is worth it rather than have ( some1 turn a blind eye ) that just dont sit well with me! |

I concur - best to get it fixed. But the speedo and horn on my wagon has been broken since around '94-'95, every rego its been a slight problem but in the end gotten it passed and neither was fixed, or so the previous owner tells me. I'm only a noobie so this year was the first time I got a car rego'ed. I had the same drama with this vechile, ended up getting it passed. I'm only fixing it now because I'd like to have a working horn & odo! |

Just one final tip thats gotten my horn going great
If you remove the horn covers from the steering wheel, and then remove the covers around the ignition and steering shaft - you'll see a sping-loaded pin that rubs against the steering wheel for the 2nd contact to make the "horn switch" work.
The pin wears out, not sure if you can get a replacement - probably can. I made one with 10min of boredom with the dremil.
Check the pin to make sure it doesn't loose contact as you steer the wheel in all directions. If it does, you can either remove the two screws that hold the horn switches (it holds the rear cover too) in place and put some washers under there. Otherwise replacing the pin involves removing the steering wheel - fun for something so trivial. |
