right i can pick up a vn wagon 91 with vp motor and t5 manual gearbox now i wont to do a motor and box swap over will i have to get another tail shaft or will my current one do the trick my car is a auto it sux as i wont a manual and the wife wonts a auto wagon so i got to do the swap
or can i just swap the gearboxes over both motors are s2 motors correct me if im wrong but are the cranks different for manual and auto or is that a s1 thing
What you will have to check if the number of bolts that hold the flywheel/flexplate on. I own a S2 VN LE and from my experiences i have learnt that the fly wheel requires 8 bolts to couple it to the crank where as the flex plate in the auto only needs 6. This and from what i hear the engine between an auto and a manual have a slightly different cam grind. Because of the nature of the transmissions the torque from the engine is needed in different rev ranges. I am not sure of wheather this is a major difference or any difference at all it is just something I have heard and worth considering. But deffinately check the bolt pattern on the end of the crank this will tell you wheather or not they are interchangable.
Also if you do go ahead with the conversion a good idea would be to replace the rear engine seal whilst the box is out. This is a very simple proceedure. Being a S2 engine it will have a single piece neoprene seal very easy to replace and only costs about $10 - $20.
I am not sure about the tailshaft length, the easiest way to test this before you start the conversion is to remove the tailshaft from both cars and just try the tailshaft from your auto to the manual if it fits you are in luck.
Other than that let us know how you get along
What's the difference between understeer and oversteer? Understeer is when the driver is scared. Oversteer is when the passenger is scared.
The number of bolts required to hold the flywheel/flexplate on depends on the engine you've got. I think the S1 has 6 or 8 depending on auto or manual and the S2 was eight on each. Or the other way around. You'll need to confirm that before you get into it.
As for the cam grind, that's a myth. The cam is the same between auto and manual. As is the memcal, the computer and the chip are the same from auto to manual.
Good advice there on doing the rear main seal, and lucky you're working on a S2 motor, it's a two piece rope seal in the S1, and leaks like a fuc&ing sieve.
