Welcome to the club, hope to see you stick around past this problem and into the future.

Onto the problem at hand, there's a few things worth checking:

Start with the spark plugs and leads. It's easy to check, and just as easy to replace. I can't understand why it would only cause problems on a hill...but what the hell...worth looking at anyway. If you've got a multi-meter measure the resistance of each of the leads, so long as there isn't one that is wildly different to the others, you should be right. I can supply the exact values for you if you want.

It's also worth checking the coil packs (the bit that the leads plug into). A quick way to check them is to go for a 10 minute drive then stop and feel each of the modules. If one is much hotter than the others you can almost bet that it's shot to pieces. It's not too hard to replace them.

The fuel system would be worth looking at next. Start with the fuel filter (near the tank on the drivers side chassis rail right up the back). If you can't remember when you last replaced it, replace it. Next step is the injectors...a shot of good quality injector cleaner (such as Wynn's or Nulon) and a full tank of 98RON fuel WITHOUT ethanol would be a good start.

Air intake could also be hampering your efforts, make sure that your air filter is in good nick, a clean filter can make a big difference. Next, is the throttle body (and kickdown cable if you're stuck with an auto)... http://www.vncommodore.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=394 give that a shot, and see how it comes up.

Let us know how you get on.

Does it do it up hills when the fuel tank is 1/2 to full?

Might pay to put a new fuel filter on your beast.

The only reason I suggested the coil pack was because it's possible for it to supply a 'weak' spark. In that it's not strong enough to ignite all of the air/fuel mixture in the cylinder, along the flat that's not going to be so much of a problem, going up hill it will really show up.

-edit- the replies that were here can now be found in the "VN Madness" thread in "General Chatter". They were getting too far off topic.
