Gutting the cat will make it run a little better (not much though) and is highly illegal. If you get caught with a hollow cat you're up for big $$$'s in fines. I know someone who got slugged just under $10,000 for having twin hollowed cats in his system.

When you say you haven't got much money to play with, what sort of budget are you looking at? Because the pacemakers alone will set you back a bit.

Gutting the cat is useless you are racing the car. I understand that Hi-flow cats has the capability to handle 650hp(i think) without any problem.
Look and see what hiflow cats are aviable in the market and see what flow rating they produce and see what best for the budget.

If you dont have much cash you could probably pick up a reasonable system from a wrecker you will be suprised what kinda stuff they have. Gutting the cat is useless true, the reason behind this is that once you have done this that you go from a 2.5" pipe to a much larger opening and area which allows the exhaust gas to slow down then back into a 2.5" sized pipe again which causes a restriction. what you need to do (this is highly illegal and i dont recomend this for street use)is fit a straight 2.5 - 3.0" pipe where the cat was (easy to do with a cut off saw and welder) the exhaust gas maintains its velocity without any restriction. this will make a slight difference in accel and power.
but like mouse says you get caught by the police with a emmisions meter and your screwed.
good luck
