hey me again i probly should open a knew topic for this 1 but thought i dont wanna open to much space in the forums and save the files for a rainy day...umm watever the hell that meant BUT anyways just wanted to know wat is MDS is it those read coilpaks and i read ur other forum mouce bout identifying a s1 s2 vn and mine seems like both lol. not sure. first of all i remember u said that s2 has the leads coming out of the coil pack the same side and it has those 3 blocky things... right? well thats wats in my car ok now then u said the fuel rails is silver for the s2 but mines black. fuel rails is the thing that hold the injectors right? then u said the radio hose for the s2 goes in the front i looked at my car and the rubber hose connects to a mettal hose and leads to the bk. so is mine a series 1 or is it a s1.5 lol. clueless. lol thanx again b4dn! xxxx

Yep...you should have opened a new thread for this one, especially the part about which series the engine is.

Using the fuel rails is a REALLY good indicator, using the radiator hose is a REALLY good indicator. The coil packs aren't such a brilliant indicator. The factory bricks that were the S1 coil packs tended to pack it in fairly easily and then you had to replace the WHOLE unit rather than an individual module. So most S1 owners just bolted S2 coils in there, they were a straight swap.

It's most likely a S1 engine. What year was the car built? (It's stamped on one of the metal plates at the back of the engine bay).

The MDS coils that you've heard about are aftermarket coil packs that CAN handle higher engine speeds. The factory ones tend to melt if they get pushed to 7000rpm, the MSD ones can (I think) run as high as 8500-9000rpm. They also claim to produce a more powerful spark, but in stock cars that's bollocks.

If that coil pack has been changed at any point during the last 10 years (which is almost a given) by a Holden dealership, they would have put the S2 coil pack on there. It's a better design than the S1 pack, and completely backwardly compatible with the S1 motor, so it meant that they only had to stock one spare part type.

Without knowing the month the car was produced (it should be on that plate at the back of the engine bay) I can't say if it's a S1 or S1.5 motor, but at the moment I'm willing to say it's probably an S1 motor, lucky you. Just pray that you never have to remove the thermostat for anything, other than that they aren't bad engines.
