Okay, first up...red tangle thing? Huh?
Anyway...open your bonnet and start looking at the engine You know the oil filler hole? That's one of the rocker covers, over the other side of the engine, you'll see another beige cover, just without the oil filler hole in it. That's the other rocker cover.
Before covering what roller rockers are, let's explain rockers. The rockers do exactly what their name suggests, they rock. (sorry couldn't resist that). Seriously...the rockers act as a lever, pushed by the pushrods, these pivot around the mid point, and then the other end of the 'lever' pushes against another set of rods which open the valves (thus letting the air/fuel into the cylinder and the exahust gasses out).
Now...normally these just slide across the top of the rods, which creates a certain amount of friction. The more friction inside an engine, the more power it takes to make the motor turn, which means the less power that makes it to the road. Roller rockers, instead of sliding across the top of the rods, have little wheels in them that 'roll' across the top of the rods, this has much less friction that just 'sliding' across the top of them. This makes the engine a little more efficient.
The ratio that everyone is talking about is how much the 'valve' end of the lever moves. For example a 1:1 ratio rocker might lift 1cm at the pushrod end, and would open the valve 1cm at the other end of it. The pivot point would be in the middle.
A higher ratio say a 1.6:1 means that if the cam moves the pushrod end of the rocker 1cm, then the valve will open 1.6cm. The wider you open the valve the more efficiently you can let the air/fuel in and the exhaust out.
BUT...and here's the catching point...to get the most out of a set of higher ratio rockers (roller or standard) you need to have a good exhaust setup, a good air intake system AND look at getting your engine map changed to really get them to do their best work.
Hope it helps.
BTW: there's no stupid questions, only stupid answers. Never be afraid to ask questions. |

A good set of yella terra 1.9:1 roller rockers will set you back a little less than a grand, then you can fit it yourself if you're handy enough with the spanners.
BUT...for most ratios above 1.6 you'll need to find spacers for your rocker covers as it's almost a certainty that your nice shiny new roller rockers will smash into your rocker covers unless you raise them a bit

Those rockers are priced fairly well when you look at what you're getting out of it. It has a similar effect to having a slightly higher cam put in, with only a fraction of the labour costs.
From memory the yella terra ones come in your choice of yellow or yellow. Not that it really matters, you can't see the damn things.
As for me replying to so many posts, I have spent a long time getting to know my VN, no reason I can't share that information with other people. If it saves them money or time, it's even better. |

| See through rocker covers would be fairly pointless given the amount of oil that goes sloshing around up there ;) |
