Can anyone help me with some ideas on how to fix my airconditioner. VN V8 Berlina that blows good cold air for about 3 minutes then blows "heater hot" air. Need to fix it before the wife divorces me.

Does this happen just as you start the car and stay hot?? Does it do this everytime you turn the A/C on?? What i am getting at is if it is cold when you start the car and then goes hot and stays hot it maybe a faulty vacuum control valve. The valve maybe sticking open and while the coolant is cold the A/C works. This is just one of i dare say many suggestions you may get but let us know weather it is staying hot or weather it does it everytime the A/C is switched on and off and we shall go from there. Also welcome to the club.

What's the difference between understeer and oversteer? Understeer is when the driver is scared. Oversteer is when the passenger is scared. |

It does it only after the aircon has been on for a while. Once it goes hot I can forget about getting cold air out of it for the rest of the day, but ok again the next day for 3 - 5 minutes.

^^^The ice isn't really a possibility with this one, it wouldn't take a full 24 hours to de-ice itself.
It could be that the drainage tube is blocked up, and cannot get rid of the water fast enough, if that happens then you'll end up with it tripping one of the seven (yes, that's right SEVEN) switches that need to be 'closed' for it to work. That would explain the delay in getting it going again too, because over night it would SLOWLY dribble out (or evaporate).
Go for a drive with the aircon on, when it cuts out, get it into the shed, and up on chassis stands.
I'm not sure EXACTLY where the drainage tube is in the V8, but in the V6 it's on the drivers side of the gearbox (get under the car for this one, have a cable tie, and swimming goggles). Be careful doing this, because if you're a bit ham-fisted with it, you'll need to replace your heater core, and the entire dash and aircon needs to come out for that one. Also, look out for things like the exhaust and gearbox, they could be a bit hot.
1: Find the rubber grommet that's on the drivers side of the gearbox, it will be fairly high up on the transmission tunnel, it's the only one that opens like a little mouth 2: Make sure you're NOT lying under it, or you'll end up covered in the mankiest crap you've ever seen. 3: Carefully 'open' the mouth with your hands, and insert the pointy end of the cable tie. 4: Very slowly push the tip of the cable tie further into the mouth, there's a little tube behind it you should be aiming for. 5: Very slowly push the cable tie up the little tube about 2-3 inches and twist it around a bit. 6: Pull it out a bit and do the same thing.
Sometime during all of this you should create a nice little waterfall. If you've had this little waterfall, go and try your aircon, it should be working again.
It's not uncommon for the drainage tube to become blocked, mine normally blocks up every two years, it takes about 5-10 minutes to unblock it, and get my air-con back.
If that doesn't work for you, there's something else to look at, but I'm fairly confident that's going to help. |
