G'Day all 1/ my aircon has died. It all started a couple of years ago when it would coutout when the work load became just too much, but after a couple min's it would restart and run for a couple of more min's and so on. Now it just refuses to go at all, except for the other day while I was screwing around with it trying to find the fault when it ran for about 10 sec and then nothing. It's not the compressor or clutch as there is no power at the conector. 2/ my drivers seat manual height adjustment is giving me the sh1ts. It doesn't stay where I put it any more. Every time I get out of it, it pops up yo the max height. Have you ever tried to into your car with the seat allmost touching the wheel and then the blody thing drops to the floor? If I remove the plastic cover I can see two little screws in there that look like they might be adjustment screws but i'm too scared to play with them as I might just stuff it up compleatly. Any help would be great

welcome to the club daveo 1rst things 1rst with the air con have u traced it back to the wiring relay or just the power plug it may pay 2 go right over it ,,sounds 2 me like a faulty relay or its earthing out sum were 4 it to b cutting in and out! then again these are 20yr old cars and well, u cant xpect them 2 go 4 ever!! mine dont work at all (but thats the way i like it). now the seat I'm not real sure but from the sounds of it u cant make it any worse than what it is so get into it and give those little screws wat 4! But me my self would just ditch the thing and hunt around 4 a good 2nd hand 1 there fairly cheap I know I got mine outa the local paper 4 $30 dont go to a wreakers as u will get ripped! hope this helps a bit m8 I know its not much 2 go on, there are a few guys on here that know quite a bit about aircons so stay posted as I'm sure sum 1 will come up with more answers enjoy m8!!!!! |

Thanks for the reply trizo. I'll get a new relay tomorrow (there cheep enough)but I don't know if that's the problem. I put a multimeter over the relay socket and could not get a reading from any of the 4 connectors, which throws me as I was expecting to get 12V on at least one and with the motor running and A/C on I should have a second reading. It would be great to get a wiring diagram for this so I know where I'm looking.

For the A/C to work there are seven (yes, that's right seven) 'switches' that must all be closed for the circuit to become live.
1) The a/c button 2) The fan speed selector 3) Hi-pressure cut-off 4) Low-pressure cut-off 5) Condensor level 6) Ignition 7) ***** I can't remember this one, sorry*
If you're after a good book with a wiring diagram in it, scoot on down to your local Kmart, Repco, Autobarn or Supercheap and get your hands on either a Gregory's manual (my preference) or the Ellery's Manual for the VN Commodore. It's got full diagrams in it, and full explanations on how to do all the basic repairs, and a lot of the 'advanced' stuff (like rebuilding your engine). Well worth the money if you have a problem, and will be damn handy in the future. |

| The one you are looking for mouce is the A/C control relay and also it is evaporator not condensor switch according to the good old gregory's manual. |
What's the difference between understeer and oversteer? Understeer is when the driver is scared. Oversteer is when the passenger is scared. |

| my a/c was playing up not long ago and it turned out to be a loose connection with the main a/c button. It might be an easy place to start, especially if they have been played with before. |

Well I got that manual (Gregory's #249) and not impressed. Nothing on schematics and one paragraph on the A/C. Obviously there's other manuals that will have the stuff I need. Mouse, what book number do you have?

@DaveO: There's bugger all of a writeup on the A/C in the Gregory's (and yeah, you've got the right number one), but there's a whole stack of pages of circuit diagrams. So long as you can follow lines drawn on a page, all the information is there.
The entire electrical system is drawn out wonderfully. If you don't know how to read a circuit schematic (for it isn't really a circuit 'diagram' as such) then post up and we can give you a few pointers, but it's all in there. |
