I've just replaced my radiator in my S2 VN V6 because it was leaking. Problem is it is using a lot of water. I thought I connected everything up as per uninstall. I then filled it with fluid, turned it on with the radiator cap off and heater on. Left it warm up until the thermostat opened then topped the fluid up. Turned it off and topped it up, then on again. I've opened the bleed nipple on the thermostat housing to make sure it was flowing through. Problem is it seems to just be sucking the coolant like it has a leak, but I can't see any leaking anywhere. The coolant is not oily. It seems to gulp anywhere between 50 - 150 ml of coolant everytime I drive it about 10 kms. The coolant will also just disappear when it is parked in the driveway! Anyone got any ideas on what the problem is or who have done it before and can tell me what I've done wrong? Any help appreciated.

I've just done the system on my S1, which is a bit different (okay, a lot different), but all the basics are the same.
There is a chance that it's taken a while for the air to get flushed from the heads, though that should only be happening while the engine is running, not sitting in the driveway.
First thing to check would be all the hose clamps, second thing to check is your engine oil. If you've got creamy looking bits in your oil then it's time to save money for a head gasket replacement.
There's also a chance that your radiator is weeping slightly and evaporating before it hits the ground, but you should see SOMETHING while it's sitting still.
Your water pump could be leaking, and it could just be running down the block, get in there with a torch and see if you can find any wet patches.
It could also be that it's taking a while to get the air out of the heater core, there might have been air bubbles in the radiator...it took me a week from when I did my cooling system until it found a stable level. Though it never really lost that much in one hit.
Big question: is the radiator cap working properly? If it's shat itself then you'll lose water there. |

| Cheers mouce, it seems that's what might have happened. I took it back to the place I bought the radiator from and they were good enough to check my system over. Seems I installed it ok - there were no leaks in the system anywhere. They did a pressure test and whatever other tests they do! - I should find out what they did, and they said there was heaps of air in the system even though I thought I got it all out! They were thinking one possibility it might be was a leaking seal on the valley cover pushing water in to the motor and evaporating it. Apparently Holden's make a seal tablet you can put in your coolant to fix up any leaks (temporarily I'd guess). Anyhow, I topped it up and I haven't noticed any fluid loss since, touch wood. |
