Ok, I know this could be caused by heaps of different stuff, but i thought i heard somewhere that this is common in VN's and there was some basic stuff to look for or change. I really enjoy my car, goes hard, cruizy etc, but man the idle sounds like a sherman tank! all rattle rattle rattle...any ideas guys?

i reckon it would be most likely a loose timing chain, if this is the case it will need replacing

When my Harmonic Balance went there was a very loud rattle at idle only. When my timing chain tensioner was gone a diff rattle at low reves/power.

If the rattle sounds like it's coming from half way down the car, there could be some junk rattling around in the catalytic converter. Mine sounded like s**t until I replaced it.

This happened to my Series 1 VN a few years ago, shocking rattle ( like a tank is a good description ) - it turned out to be the harmonic balancer, fully stuffed. The guy who replaced it said they normally do exchange balancers, except mine was so buggered they could not use it .

VN8 has a point, just shaking out the loose crap will fix it. That is, only until you get bent over for having an empty cat! EPA can give you a fkn huge fine (somewhere between $5000 and $10000) if they catch you with an empty cat. If the cops catch you and you get a nice cop, you might get away with a warning, if you get a hell-cop then start thinking about a canary.

If you're going to do anything with the cat, just replace it. It's not worth the risk of getting caught.

my old VN V6 had the dreaded timing chain rattle.
its just the tensioner thats worn. i didn't fix mine, and it started around 180,000km's.
drove it beyond 450,000km's without a problem, then traded her on my current ride.

Take it easy, if its easy take it!

How much does it normally cost to get the tensioner replaced? My little commodore has a bit of a nasty clatter while it's pulling from low in the rev range.

looking at my gregorys manual, things are described differently or at least i'm assuming they are just described differently so hopefully someone can clarify a couple things for me as i have both the rattles described in this post (idle and low rev) and i would like to fix em.

it says in the post here about a harmonic balancer - is that the same as the crankshaft pulley?

and the tensioner - is that the spring and damper that pushes against the timing chain to tension it i presume?

it it worth replacing the tensioner/damper and the timing chain?

yep, different words, same thing. If you're going to the trouble of pulling the front covers off, you may as well replace the lot. Nothing worse than doing half a job to find the wrong halfs been done! the chain could still be ok but whats the point! Another rattle i had was a shot bearing in the fan belt tensioner too.
