There are often questions coming up about just what the specific road laws are for each state, and how they differ from the Australian Road Rules, So I tracked them all down, enjoy.

Australian Road Rules:

Australian Capital Territory:

New South Wales (these are the changes to the ARR's):

Queensland and Northern Territory:

Yep, you're right about that, there are some rules which seem to go against common sense. Still...it's important to know the laws for whatever state you're driving in.

My old man actually got a ticket up in QLD many years ago, because we were towing a trailer with a Hilux at the time, and the combined length of the vehicle and the trailer was greater than 7m we were supposedly classed as a 'heavy vehicle' and thus speed limited to 100kph. No one told us that...so we were doing the posted limit of 110kph. D'OH!

That's why whenever I know I'm going to head interstate I always have a look at the rules before I go, especially when I was on my L's and P's. In some states P plate drivers are allowed to do the posted limit regardless of what it is, in other states they aren't allowed to travel any faster than 80kph (even on the open road which is bloody dangerous in my opinion), and there's one or two where they are limited to 100kph. It's too damn confusing, and of course any car with a P-plate in the window automatically attracts the attention of the police.

I got given a 'caution' from the SA police for driving when my dad was snoozing in the passenger seat. I was on my L's and just heading from Morgan to Burra (for anyone who doesn't know the road, it's one of the most boring drives in the country) and he'd just dozed off because he didn't have to tell me to look out for traffic or anything like that, of course my luck being what it is came around a corner and there was a copper sitting under a tree. I was under the speed limit, no problems there, but he saw the L-plates and saw my dad making Z's in the seat next to me. Pulled us over and made mention that the person in the passenger seat has to be awake. I can see reason behind it when you've got other vehicles around (like in towns and stuff), but when you don't see another car for 80km...what's it matter?
