Hi there, I just registered here. Nice forum.

My car is a 1990 vn Berlina, central locking and immobiliser added on.

What is the method\order to take off the inside door trim of the driver door. Im not very good with cars and this has me confused. The original manual and Gregories book doesn't seem to explain anything. Ive pulled off the strip across the top and found two screws near the bottom, but im unsure how the inside handle and inside button lock connects. How many screws are there in total to the driver door etc.

Hoping somebody can give me a 123.. step guide of how it all comes apart.

I have some problems with my driver door since somebody tried to break in and bashed a hole through under the plastic handle. Now the button lock is not coming up and the handles will not open the door, inside or out. The door is stuck closed and the lock seems jammed, so this adds to my trouble of getting the trim off.

Anyway, Ill worry about that next, Just need to understand how the trim comes off first.

Thanks in advance

Welcome to the club.

The inside door trim is a bit of a funky one and you do actually need to have the door open to get it off :(

It MAY be possible to do it with the door closed, but you need to get the lock button 'up' before you can get it off, as the black surround around the button is screwed through the door trim to the door, the only way to remove that surround is by removing the button, to remove the button it needs to be 'up'.

If you do manage to get the button up somehow then:

1) Using a small sharp knife, gently pop the orange strip off the button,
2) Unscrew the screw holding the black plastic button surround on
3) Remove screw and surround
4) Unscrew the screw holding the coloured plastic surround around the mirror control lever.
5) Get this loose from the door, not off, just loose.
6) The arm-rest/handle is a fairly easy one, on the part that you grab, pop the little cover panel out and undo the two screws
7) Remove the handle (not the door opening handle, the coloured one)
8) Unhook the little clip holding the window winder handle onto the shaft (usually a piece of cloth like an old shirt can get it), play around with it, the first time I did it I used a couple of butter knives.
9) Now that that's all off, CONGRATULATIONS, you MIGHT be able to pry the doorskin away from the door. But I think the dash will stop you from getting it off completely. Be careful doing it, I managed to rip off all but three of the little plastic lugs, and gluing them back on is hard. The 'safest' way to get it off is to wind the window down, and use a small wrecking bar (crow-bar) to gently ease the skin away from the door.

If you get it off then well done, because personally I don't think it can be done with the door closed, but feel free to prove me wrong.

It might be easier to go to a wreckers and get a new skin for the door, and just hack a massive hole in the one there now so that you can open the door. To be honest, that's how I'd be doing it.

Sucks that your car got taken to, at least they didn't take the car. Post up with how you go, and we'll see what we can do to help with anything else that comes up.

You should be able to pick one up from a wreckers for less than $40! Go to somewhere like pick-a-part and grab it (and any other pieces you need) and you should be able to get one for $20 or less. You might not find an exact colour match, but it'll be pretty close. Unless you're one of the poor sods like myself who has a brown interior. I've never managed to find any panels that are the even close to the same colour as what I have.

You can normally find complete doors with glass for $100. Glad I live in Melbourne :)

Ok guys, I got the door open and the trim off. The door is opening sometimes now but I think the mechanisim inside is a little loose, has some slack in it. Its been stuffed up a little by the people that tried to break in and had a go at it with a screwdriver or whatever.

When I pull the inside doorhandle to open the door it makes a few pieces move inside there, but when I let go of the handle the inside parts dont spring back into place. I have to reach in and push it back, or click the door clip with a screwdirver to get the door open again.

The part I can see is a piece of metal that forms a loop at the end and is hooked onto another piece of metal to hold it it place. The bit with the loop is meant to slide up and down when you pull the door handle, except mine is just moving down and then sticking until I reach in and push it back. This bit with the loop links upto a few other pieces that also move with it. Its really hard to see in there properly.

Anyway, what should I do? Are there places that replace or repair the internal parts of a door that could do this, or would I have to get a new door. I doubt I can fix it myself it looks too fiddly. What would be easier. My windows are electric and I would prefer to keep that, or get another door with it. The door also has a small hole bashed though it aswell. The hole doesn't bother me. Im trying not to spend much on this car.

Another thing Im wondering about getting a new door is about my Immobiliser and central locking. I could survive without the central locking but when the immobiliser was first put in I think the guy took off the driverdoor trim. Will putting another door in cause the immobiliser problems?, I assume its would have nothing to do with the door myself.

The hole is on the outside of the door. They went thru the metal under the black plastic handle part when they tried to break in. About the size of a 10c piece.

I wonder if they would have bothered if they had noticed the little immobiliser LED.

I forgot to say, I didnt have to cut the trim. I got that off without hurting it.

It's not too hard to replace all the rods/handle/springs associated with the door handle/lock setup yourself. Especially since you were clever enough to get the door skin off without opening the door (I'm impressed by that, I didn't think it would really be possible, well done). But allowing for the fact that there is a hole in the metal of the door, I'd be inclined to say just get a door and have it resprayed to match the rest of the car. It would be possible to use bog to fill it up and make it look as good as new, but since it's part of 'security', I'd rather have metal between potential thieves and my car.

A new door (from a wreckers) would be the easiest way to go with this in my opinion.

Ok thanks guys Ill check around for another door and see what I can find.

Oh yea and I got the door open before I took the trim off so it was nothing special haha. It was just that my door would not open for afew days and I was climbing over from the passenger seat always then I was down the shops and it just suddenly opened for me so I was lucky.

Its sorta stuck again now but I can open it by poking a screw driver at the door click thingy inside, so I left the trim off for now and can get it open again when I need to.

Thanks guys much appreciated.
