Hey guys,

New to this, so wondering if i could get some opinions?
What is the deal with the rocker cover oil breathers?

Do they serve a purpose other than let your engine breath?
I heard they were only usefull on high compression engines...
Would it be worth me getting one, cos during summer the engine gets pretty damn hot...

One other quick one, just bought a set of HID globes, they are extended watt, rated at 130/110W, wondering if these will melt my headlamp surrounds, and blow fuses etc. Are they too powerful/hot?

Cheers boys!

If your engine is running way too hot then I'd start trying to find out why before you worry about breathers for the rocker covers. BTW: how do you know it runs too hot?

Also...the globes...if they are true HID globes you'll find that they are NOT ADR approved for use with the VN. If they are just standard globes that are made to look like HID then you'll find that they very quickly melt the insulation off the wires. They will also melt the fuse (not blow it, just melt the casing), the fuse holder, the relay and the relay holder. I had that problem and I was only running 75/100 globes! Unless you plan on doing some major upgrades to the wiring for the head lights, don't even think about putting them in...you will have problems.

A final thought: why did you buy them before asking for advice on them?

Thanks for the warm welcome...

I never said that my engine runs too hot, i said it runs pretty damm hot! Hence, combustion = heat!
The engine never over heats, but i just wanted to know whether the oil breathers were a benefit or waste of time? Has anyone tried one and found it usefull?

I went into my auto electrician today, the globes obviously arent legal, but the globe itself is rated at 60/55W, but supppedly puts out the light of that of a 130/110W globe. He reckons wont melt anything... he hopes... lol!

I bought them, because i hear alot about all this different gadgets, and generally like testing their validity... which is always worthless...

So long as the engine doesn't over heat, that's a good start. As for if the rocker cover breathers are actually beneficial...I've done a bit of digging and have found that they are actually illegal for use on street cars in Australia.

The reason is that the emission control system on a VN commodore has the crank case ventilation plumbed back into the intake chamber (ditto the rocker covers, as far as I know), since it's set up like that, any modification which allows it to vent to open atmosphere (such as rocker cover breathers), would go against the EPA laws. And any violation of the EPA laws usually ends up with a LARGE cash fine, sorry mate. There might be a way around it, but...you might want to check with the relevant organisations in SA.

Okay...now you've got me interested, 55/60 globes that are the same intensity as 110/130? What are they? The only ones like that I can think of would be the Narva Plus 50 range, but you're looking at more than DOUBLE the output of the standard globes. I'd be real interested to know what those are...I'm looking at a light upgrade for my VN, so these could be something worth looking at.

Pity they aren't legal.

When you try them out let me know how the wiring holds up, so long as the wiring can hold up to it, I can't see why you couldn't run them. If the globe is only rated at 55/60 then the headlight assembly should be able to handle that no problems.

As for buying and trying the gadgets, that makes sense, I've been guilty of that myself. Someone has to test them out, right?

speaking of headlights i put 100\90W H.I.L. globes in(H4) and 100W (H3) best out, nice n' bright, nice n' white, i put em in and took me dad 4 a spin and we went out the next day and brought some for his RODEO. havn't melted any wires or fuses, and the lens doesn't get hot, but you dont wanna be coming the other way when there on high bean cos there friken bright.
oh and if you have coloured parkers, mine are blue on low beam it tends to mix a bit and make the light have a kinda blueish tinge.

Hey Mouse, yeah someone has to try all these toys to see if they work...
Put those headlights in, and turned em on while i was close, and very shortly after i could smell this burning plastic smell...
That was enough to tell me that something wasnt right!
I ripped em out, dont wanna risk it!!
Best globes i can think of are Philips Crystal vision! They have a 4300k rating, but cost like $120 in stores. Ebay sells em for $80, but they are prettty good i heard. Thinkin about tryin a set myself!

I'd heard the same about the oil breathers being illegal, my mechanic had mentioned something about it! Now i need some other things to tinker with...

I didn't think the Philips Crystal globes were ADR approved (?), but then again I could be wrong on that one.

Did you work out what was burning/melting? Was it wires or light assembly or ... ? Anyway $120 for globes??? NAH! I can get a good set of driving lights for $140 (real ones, not those dodgy little fog-light-wanna-be ones.

@James, I don't know how you're managing to draw that much through the fuse without it popping. All up you're looking at 33A when you're running high beam...or did you do something sneaky (and just a tad silly) and upgrade the fuse?

Unfortunately, i will have to find yet another set of white, but legal globes...

Narva Arctic Blue lights: http://www.narva.com.au/Globes_22.html
ADR approved and Street legal, at least according to the website.

Damn nice globes from what I've seen too. Thinking about them for mine, but I'll wait until the current ones die.
