hey I've talked to you guys about this before and before i even go order the shift kit for my car the B&M for a hydraulic th700 trans
my car has done like 340,000kms overall when i brought it.
the car has had another motor put into at some stage i don't know when. the new motor could have only done 140,000 or 230,000 who knows.
thing is do you think the last guy would have hooked it up to the original trans which has done 340,000.
would this shift kit blow my trans due to wear or age?

| if you have no slipping when changing gears flatofut and no delay or shuddering it should be fine, but if it has slip in it it will destroy the box. |

I just got home 9:30 took it for a real trash to do a check tonight.
i chuck it in 1st to get of the line and when i hit it forward she pops in after like a second (this is what i want the shift kit for to speed it up).
but in all that it makes no unusual noise,no slipping, grinding, nothing out of the ordinary it's got fresh oil.
seems mechanically fine just was wondering about the km's do you think i should get it? |

| maybe if u think it might blow, get it checked out, the bands seem to give people trouble, before they even realise. shift kits can be pricy at times so do your homework first |

| i went up to autobarn today to look at the B&M shift kit and they want $200 is this cheap or expensive and they said it would take a good day to install eg. dropping the trans out. are they really worth the effort? |

| It isnt an easy job with the transmission still in the car as the check ball placement can be a pain in the butt. Sounds like you got the wrong price or something. I got mine 2 weeks ago for $75 at Supercheap. I warn you that you really do need to be confident if you are going to do the job yourself. They call it a 2 hour job, but i think this estimate is for someone that does this specific work daily. My mechanic and i did it in about 2.5 hours. The hardest thing about the job is reading the detailed instructions, getting your checkballs correct, and the sheer awkward nature of being under the car performing the re-install of the valve body while keeping the checkballs in place. Glad its over lol! |

so you bought the B&m shift improver for a TH700 trans right. Autobarn is usually the most expensive so I'll call up supercheap and get a price.
My dad's a mechanic and he's really busy coming up to Xmas so and he only does jobs for me when he's got spare time for free. Otherwise I'll have to do it after Xmas or something.
Do you think a installation from supercheap would be pricey or something?
He what model VN you got and what shift kit model or part # did you buy. |

| I just got the B&M Shift Improver kit. It comes with Stages 1 and 2. Stage 1 is for towing, and stage 2 is called Street and Strip. My VN is a series 2, and has the TH700 transmission. For an installation, you are generally looking at $300-400, which would include a service of the gearbox. My mate is a mechanic, and he charged me $300 to put a new water pump, and the shift kit on my car. With your dad being a mechanic, i would get him to do it, and you could give him a hand. The job should be easier on a hoist as you have more space, as my mate and i did it with the car on two "fixed" jacks. Supercheap have an order catalogue, go into your local Supercheap, and tell them you are after a B&M Shift Improver Kit for a TH700. They will order it in for you. Mine was in the next day to be picked up. Also, get a 5 litre bottle of Valvoline ATF DX-3 while you are there. |

Thanks i will go to supercheap Auto as i think they are less expensive than Autobarn a with doing it with my dad on our hoist at home i will be able to learn hot to do it and how the trans works etc.
is that oil you recommended the best stuff to have for your trans in general or just especially with stage 2 shift kits.
so I'm looking at around $100-200 overall for the B&M am I and just a few solid hours work.
And also while you were going to the effort of pulling out the transmission i don't know what i looks like inside of the top of my head but did you just replace any bearings and other rotating parts while you were at it so everything's fresh. |

| hey i was at Autobarn on boxing day for the sales just getting a few bits i needed and had a look i the Cabernet in the spare parts section and you know how to get the B$M improver stage 2 it was about $100 or so i looked at just the handle and they wanted $500. Do you have to get this handle to use the shift kit or can you run the original. |

You dont need the handle for the shift improver kit. When i did my box, all we did was replace the fluid and filter (no bearings were changed), and followed the steps required to upgrade to stage 2 (Street and strip).

okay i get it now so you can have the stage 2 shift kit in and use your ordinary shifter. that's probably a better thing because i don't know if I'm allowed a shift kit on my P's and this will keep it unnoticed. thanks nodg
i spent the weekend up at my dad's house cleaning out our shed and getting it ready for me and my brother to work on our cars.
so now i got a 2 post hoist and all the time in these holidays to attack that job so I'll order that shift kit asap |
