Hi guys, it's been a lil while since I've posted, but again it's in regard to my lil bros beloved VN commodore. It was broken into a few months back by the local yokals(big surprise) haha. He had assumed the worst ofcourse, burnt out car! the next day at work he won a fuel voucher (ironic) then next day waiting out the front for a mate to pick him up for work some locals hassled him for a dollar... he said nar mate.. have you got a dollar, someone stole my car last night i need a new one!!! they looked at him funny then asked him for a sip of his drink! he said "take it". bad luck i guess. later that day cops found his car and the smell was so putrid that the aid of a bottle of jiff was almost inadequate, haha. Anyways question time. Today he has bought a new igniton barrel centre piece with new key if you know what I mean . as well as new electrical plug. The new ignition centre part with key appears to have to be inserted into the original ignition barrel, problem is we can't figure out how to get old damaged one out. There a few little screws we've managed to remove but its still jammed in pretty tight, and the main bolt that appears to be clamping it onto the steering coloum has no thread. So how do you take it off? need Ideas pls guys. Should we just use main force to rip it out or is there a technique? Cheers for any tips Question time. How do

the igniton is easy, hell when my barrel collapsed I took a spare one down the shops were it was left and plugged it in and turned the key with the barrel and all hanging around my knees, Im not to sure of how you are trying to install it but it is a easy job , 10 mins max.. if you can get some pics up that would help a bit, from memory it was a couple of bolts/screws..... ok just had a good look at the one in my shed and it is held on by one 8mm hex bolt the clamp wraps around the steering colum and should split in two.. the hex bolt is located above the barrel it self , you will also need to take the whole plastic shroud of the colum... cant see it not having a hex hed on it m8 cause these barrels r fairly sh1tty (as you would be after 20yrs of poking and prodding) but it is a part of the car that will need to be removed somday... so.... wait I just had a thought ,ouch, maybe holden went cheap on cars in the eastern states and only used bolt with out heads lol.. wouldnt surprise me in the least!

This is almost getting off the subject a bit, but I saw in a magazine a few years back that there was an anti theft device that sleaves over the top of the ignition barrel and most of the wireing loom. this comes in a kit that gives you the ability to swap the plastic covers with a durable crome plate. I havent gotten around to asking at a lock smiths on the availability of these kits but your brother might like to look into it so as his car doesnt get half inched again

Hi trizo, yeah there is no hex key on the main bolt that holds it to the steering colum, (see pic, other side of it is just thread, no nut.) So yeah it does look kinda tricky to get the barrel off the steering colum, and besides ripping the old one out I don't see how shes coming out. And if we do that not sure how the new one will fit.
and heres the new ingnition thingy next to the old one.
Hey V8VNCalais , thats not a bad idea hey, a little bit of extra security. I have an alarm and immobiliser in my car, as well as a secret fuel pump switch, so if someone manages to get mm car turning over with ignition, unless they know where the fuel pump switch they won't be taking it anywhere. A pic of my ride. Thanks for the responses so far guys.

hmm strange... just a thought but if you can get ya hands on a compressor and a die grinding kit, you might be able to drill into in and get he easyouts in there! other wise chop the sucker of, seems strange that that it has been done that way, basical they had to thread it in somehow!

It looks like one of those tamper proof set up's. When installing they have another little end on it with either an allan head or phillips head in and and when the bolt is done up to the correct tension the end breaks off making them unable to be removed. The same setup is on my bike's ignition. If you can make a slot in the end of it it may come out quite easily.
What's the difference between understeer and oversteer? Understeer is when the driver is scared. Oversteer is when the passenger is scared. |

You can use a small chisel to punch the side and loosen it enough to undo with a pair of visegrips. If the anti theft device (which is called a name the eludes me) is in place, your in for tough time. You need to get the 3 (?) tamper screws out. You can use a small pair of visegrips to grab the edges and undo them. Then there is a fair bit of manoeuvring to remove the cover and bracket from the barrel assembly. You can do it in about 30 minutes, but expect longer the first time. :)
As a side, I had one fitted to my 89 VN V8 pursuit and it stopped it getting stolen. They unlocked the door with a small blade to the left of the drivers door handle, barely noticeably. Then ripped the column cover off, saw the antitheft there, and closed the door and left. Made it too hard to steal :D They are a nice little bit to fit, and used to lower your insurance.

BTW, is there is a bolt or cap screw in there, then the ignition has been replaced before.
