Hi guys,
I bought my 1990 vn around March this year for $500 off one of my mums old friend on the Clock was 81,000 i've so far got it to 112,000 but when i bought it i was putting in 98 octane vortex and could get 540km per tank and now that it's getting hotter i'm only basically getting 440 to 450 on unleaded can't afford the good stuff and getting into summer would it be the a/c using up the petrol, had a service a few weeks ago and he said it was fine no error codes on the computer, and also with my a/c fan switch it only works on 3 and 4 speed how would I fix that? and i get a kinda tick tick tick while the engine is running in the engine bay ,
thanks.

If you're running the a/c all the time, then yes that's what's using the extra fuel. I'm impressed you're getting 450 off a tank with the a/c running to be honest.
Okay, the fan only running on a higher speed, is due to a blown resistor that hides up ontop of the firewall. I don't have my manual with me, so I'll post up a how-to guide later if no one else beats me to it. Either that, or if you plan on doing most of your servicing yourself, burn down to your local Repco and get the Gregory's service manual for a VN commodore. It will become your VN Bible.
The ticking noise is probably just noisy injectors, run a shot of injector cleaner through your next tank of fuel, that should help. If not then let us know and we'll see what else it could be. |

Hi, thanks for replying
I know bugger all about engines, but the ticker tick sound is coming from right ontop of the engine you have those chord things 3 on each side it sounds like it's coming from them. not the spark plug chords but the other ones, when you said you were suprised that i got 450km out of a tank what do you mean? what do commy's normally give out of a tank?

Mine normally gets about 450 out of a tank if I nurse it along and don't use the a/c. I don't know if that's normal or not, but I'd like your fuel economy.
With that sound coming from the very top of the engine, that sounds more and more like noisy injectors (hopefully). Try that injector cleaner and see if that makes it any better.

coolant temp sensor (two wire computer used one... there is a seperate single wire sensor for the dash) will cause your enginge to run hot and the thermo fan wont engage when it should (could be your problem)
otherwise your o2 sensor is prolly pretty old giving less than reasonable a/f readings causing extra fuel usage
your injectors will tick softly (normal) but if its a loud ticking then id suspect lifters... by the sounds of your post it is just your injectors wich is normal
your fuel consuption is about average i tend to get 10l/100k depends alot on driving habbits but i find that 98 premo gets me alot further than standard ulp wich could be the cause of your efficiency
how hot are you getting and is your fan coming on? |

Hi,
Yeah I notice the fan comes on quite a bit normally the temperature guage C | | | | | | H normally doesn't go over the 2nd dash does go up to 3rd and Half once while i was at traffic lights for more than 5 mins. but that's when my radiator was leaking got that fixed up, I have been using 98 octane and yes it does make it go futher
ALSO I heard a few people talking about they couldn't get clear Tail lights for a VN sedan I came across new ones today at the wreckers he gets them from a company called TYC elegante or something like that cost me $120 a set, i like them, i hope i don't get anymore water in the boot.

Post picks of the 'clear' taillights you picked up. There are a few bouncing around, but they are damn hard to track down.
