I'd start with checking the plugs and leads and perhaps the adjustment on the thottle cable and kick back cable if it has one.

A shiny new set of 4.11s will get it sorted if nothing else ;)

some possiable things

clogged fuel filtre
plugs and leads
coil pack
fuel pump stuffed (unlikely.......but maybe)

theres surely heaps more that would cause the problem but i cant think of anymore at the moment...sorry

but yeh start with leads and plugs...........my plugs were clean but when i changed them the other day (and leads but they were seconhand ones) me car has gone from fast to faster and smoother plus i am getting more k's to the amout of fuel i use so no matter how much clean and good looking they are there not always in good nick

spark plugs cost me 13 bucks for 6 and they were bosh however that was from supercheap as there haveing a 40% of all spark plugs

hope that helped

do all of the above.. then take the throttle body of and give it a good polish out! Reset the kik bak ( if it a auto ) then reset the ecm!! A good air filter dont go astray!! But as for the lag on take of sounds like the kick bac to me!

It's a cable that runs between the trans and throttle body on the auto equipped cars. Very easy to spot as it passes through a bracket with two nuts on either side and a threaded plastic sleeve that aids in adjustment.

The T700 fitted to the VNs works on pressure to control shifts where as the later trans were electronically controlled. If it is not correctly adjusted the box will do all sorts of fun stuff... except go work well.

a good service on the car like everyones said(dont forget to clean iac an throttle body with carby cleaner), but another good idea is to replace the sensors on the throttle body and on the exhaust manifold. doesnt cost much to do but when the ecu is recieving accurate info from all the sensor it will save you fuel and give a snappier accelerator which will either add or reduce the fuel to allow your motor to rev up quicker

Cheers,
Nodg.
