Im looking into giving my transmission a full overhaul. I have since discovered that the 4L60E was coupled with the LS1 where the TH700 was holdens choice for the VN. It has been pointed out to me the the kick down on the TH700 was cable controlled and the 4L60E used an electronic kick down.(thanx mild50) When I google TH700 I get the results for TH700/4L60E for anything austrailan or I found an american whole saler who has referanced my search as being 700R4 /4L60E (Actually its google that has done this) Im assuming that considering the corvetter servo can be used as an upgrade part does that mean the 700R4 is a corvette trans. and also does any one know if the 4L60E parts can be used in the TH700. If any one could shed some light on this it would be great.

The book i have is for the 4L60E this came from the holden workshop manual supplier.
The difference between the 6 and 8 box is a different sized converter and extra plates in the clutch packs.
Hope this helps...
The kickdown has been cable on the trans that I've seen.
The box is the same 4L60E anything that came to OZ came speced for holden.
TH700 is a generic name sort of a carry over from the good old Turbo Hydra 350's and 400

| big difference between the two! As for the electronic kick down they were more pushed towards the vr and up wards, I wouldnt recomend using parts of 1 to another, stick with the same parts, if you want a bit of kik out of your g/b get the corvette servo and a stage 1or 2 depending on your preferance, that will give u a load more snap and will prolly be cheaper , at least you notice results with a shift kit installed! |

| yeh vn box's are better in my opinion as when im driving me vs and give it a little the changes are slightly slow but when i give the vn a bit the changes are straight away.....given that a VS is soo much quicker and quieter....but i still like vn's lol |

There were some initial bugs in the earlier versions. A feather in GM / Hydramatic's cap was the fact that they stuck with the 700R and followed through with improvements and upgrades. 1987 and newer transmissions are considered to be refined and very reliable, as indicated by their OEM installations against performance 350 V8s in sports cars and trucks. Earlier transmissions are affordably given all these upgrades to put them at the same high level of durable service and performance. Aftermarket building techniques and parts upgrades make this transmission very capable of Big Block power in race, street and off-road applications.
In 1990, the 700R4 was redesignated as the 4L60 (4-speeds, Longitudinally positioned, 6000 lbs. GVW). This was a change in name only with no significant mechanical changes associated.
How accurate is this???? |

although the th700 is vastly different to the 4l60e, it is also quite the same. sharing the same ratios, case sizing and bolt pattern. The main differance is (as we know already) the th700 is hydraulically controlled and the 4l60e is electronically controlled by the ecu- The 4l60 is the correct name for the th700 (later on) but if you added the 'e' on the end it would be wrong.
It is possible(theroedically) but this will involve having a modified memcal in the ecu to tell the box when to upshift and when to downshift, otherwise its useless. other than that it will bolt up snug, ive read about people using th700's on the ecotec with little to no dramas (with tweaking of course) |
